The municipalities of Fuengirola and Mijas have signed an agreement to maintain the horizontal signage on the roads they share. Fuengirola will carry out the work for 2026, starting this Sunday on La Unión street.

The councillors for Infrastructure of Fuengirola and Mijas, José Sánchez and Juan José Torres, presented this Wednesday an agreement to preserve and repaint the horizontal signage on the roads separating both municipalities. The agreement aims to enhance the safety of drivers and pedestrians in these border areas.

The agreement will have an initial duration of four years, extendable for another four, and establishes that the two municipalities will alternate each year in carrying out the work. The first year, 2026, corresponds to Fuengirola, which will begin the work this Sunday on La Unión street.

The scope of action includes La Unión street from its intersection with the Coín road, and the Cañadas road until it meets the Mijas road. At these points, pedestrian crossings, longitudinal lines, road markings, and symbols will be preserved and repainted.

The proximity of both towns means they share roads where one pavement belongs to one municipality and the opposite one to the other. The council responsible for each year must provide the materials, labour, provisional signage during the works, and the necessary material and human resources.

“With Mijas, we share a good number of linear meters of public roads, and all of them must be in perfect condition,” said the Infrastructure councillor of Fuengirola, José Sánchez, who added that both governments have been seeking ways to coordinate maintenance for years.

His counterpart in Mijas, Juan José Torres, explained that the agreement “is the result of the close collaboration that exists between the two cities and the willingness to work together on issues that directly affect our residents.” Torres added that the well-being of residents is a priority and that he hopes to close new agreements between both municipalities.

The repainting work on La Unión street starts this Sunday and will be carried out by the Fuengirola City Council during 2026.
