The Town Hall of Nerja and the Association of Municipalities of the Eastern Costa del Sol-Axarquía will present the award on October 15. The distinction comes from a proposal by the local mayor of Río de la Miel and has the support of the PP, PSOE, and Podemos-Izquierda Unida.
The resident of Nerja María del Carmen Centurión will receive recognition as Rural Woman of the Axarquía 2026 awarded by the Association of Municipalities of the Eastern Costa del Sol-Axarquía. The award ceremony is scheduled for October 15 at the headquarters of the Association.
The designation originated from a proposal by the local mayor of Río de la Miel, Adolfo Padial, promoted by the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, and the councillor for Equality, Ana María Muñoz. The initiative received support from the municipal groups of PP, PSOE, and Podemos-Izquierda Unida.
Centurión, born on January 31, 1956, grew up in Río de la Miel and has dedicated her life to agriculture. She began working in the fields as a child and at the age of 16 joined as a dancer in the Fandangos Cortijeros del Río de la Miel, a tradition she has helped keep alive for decades. Although she is now retired, she remains connected to the land and the customs of her surroundings.
The honouree was received this morning at the Town Hall alongside her husband by the mayor, the councillor for Equality, and the local mayor, who conveyed their congratulations. The mayor highlighted her career with these words:
“María del Carmen undeniably represents the values of rural women: effort, dedication, and commitment to agriculture, family, and our traditions”
Armijo added that the award is a source of pride for Nerja, Maro, and Río de la Miel. Centurión, for her part, thanked the entire Municipal Corporation for the recognition of a life dedicated to the land.
The award ceremony will take place on October 15 at the headquarters of the Association of Municipalities of the Eastern Costa del Sol-Axarquía.
