Antena 3 Noticias and the Mutua Madrileña Foundation have distinguished Antequera City Council for a programme of 42 workshops aimed at preventing sexual and gender violence in educational centres. The award ceremony took place at the Atresmedia headquarters.

The Antequera City Council has received recognition from Antena 3 Noticias and the Mutua Madrileña Foundation for its educational work in preventing sexual and gender violence. The award is part of the initiative “Against Abuse, Zero Tolerance” and highlights the work of the Equity Area to promote relationships among adolescents based on consent, empathy, and respect.

The ceremony took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 30 at the Atresmedia headquarters. Attendees included the mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón; the deputy mayor for Social Welfare and Citizen Cooperation, Alberto Arana; and the councillor for Equity and Family, María Sierras.

The recognised project is titled “Education for the Prevention of Sexual and Gender Violence. Consent, Empathy, and Desire.” The Equity Area has developed 42 workshops in various educational centres in the city, aimed at students in fourth year of Compulsory Secondary Education.

Each group of students receives two sessions. In the first, girls and boys work separately to facilitate participation and expression of opinions. The second session brings the group together in a mixed session where they share what they have learned and seek common ground.

The content addresses stereotypes associated with male and female sexuality, the myths of pornography and its differences from reality, as well as peer pressure in sexual and affective relationships. Consent, empathy, respect, and pleasure as elements of a healthy relationship are other key aspects of this educational intervention, which also incorporates an analysis of the Save the Children report from 2020 on the use of pornography in adolescence. The workshops have been developed by professionals Nerea Casado, Borja Rodríguez, and Javier Espinosa.

After receiving the award, Manolo Barón highlighted the work done in schools. “The Antequera City Council has received recognition for its educational work in our schools with all the children of Antequera,” he stated. The mayor specifically congratulated the municipal officials involved: “Congratulations, María; congratulations, Alberto. Great work.”

The “Municipalities Against Abuse” initiative was launched in October 2021 to mobilise local entities across Spain against gender violence. Through this initiative, Antena 3 Noticias and the Mutua Madrileña Foundation recognise municipal initiatives for their involvement in preventing abuse and raising public awareness.

The recognition values the work of the Antequera City Council in bringing prevention into classrooms and providing adolescents with tools to identify harmful behaviours and build relationships based on equality and mutual respect.
