The Estepona City Council inaugurates this afternoon the new Aurelio Gurrea Chalé Square, a space of 1,841 square metres that pays tribute to his work at the helm of APRONA.
The Estepona City Council will inaugurate on Friday at 20:30 the new Aurelio Gurrea Chalé Square, a public space that recognises the social, cultural and educational work of a key figure in the municipality for over five decades. The event will take place in the vicinity of Cristóbal Colón and María de Maeztu streets, in front of the APRONA Foundation facilities.
The name of the square honours Aurelio Gurrea Chalé, president of APRONA since 1982, an organisation that supports people with functional diversity. Under his leadership, the entity promoted aid and grants that allowed for the maintenance and improvement of centres for individuals with intellectual disabilities. More than four decades later, he continues to lead one of the most advanced facilities in Andalusia.
The new space, measuring 1,841 square metres, has been completely remodelled. The work has included the renewal of the pavement and urban furniture, the replacement of sewage and supply networks, and the improvement of the rainwater collection system through new connections and drains.
Additionally, green areas, a fountain, and a drinking fountain have been incorporated, aiming to create a more pleasant environment for residents. The renovation has particularly taken into account the needs of APRONA users, seeking a more accessible, comfortable, and inclusive space for people with functional diversity.
With this initiative, the City Council aims to leave a permanent record of the city's gratitude to a person whose life has been dedicated to serving others, promoting culture, and committing to Estepona. The choice of location, in front of APRONA, reinforces Aurelio Gurrea's connection with the foundation.
The inauguration is scheduled for 20:30 this Friday, and local authorities and representatives from APRONA are expected to attend. Residents will be able to enjoy a renovated space that enhances the quality of life in the area from then on.
