Estepona City Council is progressing in the first phase of the velodrome next to the Monterroso stream, which will include a football pitch and the city’s first rugby facilities. The works, awarded for 3.65 million, will last 9 months.
The excavation work for the future velodrome in Estepona is nearing completion. This has been reported by the Estepona City Council, which details that the drainage systems for rainwater and sewage are also being finalised for the facility, located next to the Monterroso stream and the Camino de las Mesas, in the northwest of the municipality.
The excavation is part of the first phase of the project, which began last June. The project includes a peri-urban park of over 20,000 square metres with an inclined cycling track (velodrome), a state-of-the-art artificial grass pitch prepared for rugby and football, and a service building with toilets, changing rooms, a gym, offices, and storage areas.
The cycle stadium will have an oval shape and stands distributed over several levels with an initial capacity for a thousand spectators. The dimensions of the playing field follow the criteria of the Regulations on Sports Facilities and Spaces (NIDE) from the Higher Sports Council, while the cycling track complies with UCI regulations.
The project was awarded to UTE Parque Estepona for 3,652,569.85 euros (including VAT). The awarded company presented an improvement that reduces the initial timeframe, so the total duration of the works will be 9 months. The first phase will consist of providing the land with basic services of water, sanitation, and electricity.
In the same area, the City Council is working on a project to integrate the Monterroso river into the city, creating an urban area connected to the Fair and Sports Park and the urban core. This development will be accompanied by the construction of protected housing: the City Council is processing a modification of the planning to obtain land for around 300 VPO in the Monterroso area.
“The excavation on the land is part of the first phase of action in this construction. In addition, the execution of the necessary rainwater and sewage systems for this sports facility is also nearing completion,” according to the municipal statement.
With a completion timeframe of 9 months from June, the works for the velodrome and the associated sports facilities should conclude throughout 2027, while the processing of the 300 planned VPOs in the Monterroso area progresses in parallel.
