Over 5,000 students from Infant and Primary have returned to classrooms in the seven public schools and one private school in Benalmádena. The City Council has allocated nearly 80,000 euros to waterproof the roof of CEIP La Paloma and 45,000 to improve fire protection at Poeta Salvador Rueda.
The school year has started in Benalmádena with more than 5,000 students from Infant and Primary distributed among seven public centres and one private. The mayor, Juan Antonio Lara, and the councillor for Education, María Luisa Robles, visited the schools La Paloma and Mariana Pineda to support the educational communities on the first day of class.
During the visits, both municipal officials held meetings with the management teams and representatives of the educational communities. The aim, according to the City Council, is to understand first-hand the needs of each centre, listen to proposals, and monitor municipal actions throughout the school year.
The mayor highlighted the effort made during the summer in the schools. "While our students enjoyed their holidays, we continued working in their schools so that they would find well-maintained, safe, and prepared centres upon their return," Lara stated. The work included painting, plumbing, tiling, electrical installations, pruning, installation of new benches, and cleaning and washing of the centres and their surroundings. Additionally, 380 lights have been replaced with LED lighting.
In terms of prevention and safety, the City Council has launched three new contracts: fire protection, defibrillators, and legionella control. Each centre is equipped with a defibrillator, and periodic checks of the water networks and cleaning of cisterns are carried out.
The most notable investment announced during the meetings is the one allocated to CEIP La Paloma, where the City Council plans to allocate nearly 80,000 euros for the waterproofing of the roof. The intervention aims to comprehensively solve existing problems and improve the building's maintenance. This is complemented by a budget of 45,000 euros to enhance the detection and fire protection system at CEIP Poeta Salvador Rueda, as well as repainting signage in various school environments to reinforce safety at access points.
The councillor for Education emphasised the importance of maintaining direct communication with educational communities to "listen to their needs and continue working on the priorities they convey to us." Robles reminded that the municipal maintenance and conservation work "takes place throughout the year and continues once the school year has started."
The mayor had words for the youngest who stepped into a classroom for the first time today and wished "a magnificent school year to all students, families, teachers, and management teams." Lara also thanked the work of the caretakers and maintenance staff, as well as the coordination between the areas of Education, Operational Services, Municipal Buildings, Mobility, and Occupational Risk Prevention.
"Our work does not end with the return to classrooms. We will continue to listen to and support our centres throughout the year, because caring for the spaces where our children learn and grow is also investing in the present and future of Benalmádena"
The City Council of Benalmádena thus maintains continuous monitoring of the eight educational centres in the municipality, with periodic meetings and improvement actions that will extend beyond the start of the school year.
