The programme will run from September 28 to October 4 with cultural, educational, social, prevention, and safety proposals. The main novelty will be the joint tribute to the seniors from the four centres in the municipality.
The Third Age Delegation of the Benalmádena City Council has organised the IX Week of Older People, which will take place from September 28 to October 4 with cultural, educational, social, and leisure activities, as well as initiatives on prevention, safety, and active ageing.
The councillor for the Third Age, María Luisa Robles, explained that the programme has been designed with the participation of the seniors and the four centres in the municipality: Anica Torres, Silvestre González, Carola, and Doña Gloria.
“We want our seniors to be the true protagonists of this week and to highlight all the work they do throughout the year in our centres,” Robles stated.
The programme will kick off on Monday September 28, at 18:30, at the Casa de la Cultura, with the institutional presentation and the reading of the manifesto. The event will feature the mayor, Juan Antonio Lara; councillor María Luisa Robles; the presidents of the CPA Anica Torres and Silvestre González, and representatives from the social centres Carola and Doña Gloria. At 19:00, the documentary ‘Gente Grande’, directed by Javier Gómez Bello, will be screened.
On Tuesday 29, at 11:00, the Casa de la Cultura will host the Antonio del Cid Poetry Marathon. At 18:30, ‘Seniors with Art’ will take place, a show featuring users from the centres, with choirs and flamenco and castanet workshops, among other performances. At the end, a light meal will be held in the courtyard of the Casa de la Cultura.
“This edition takes a step further because we wanted to enrich the programme and offer more opportunities to meet, share, and enjoy. Many of the activities are directly led by our seniors, who participate one hundred percent and demonstrate the enormous dynamism that exists in our centres,” Robles emphasised.
Prevention will have a prominent space. On Wednesday 30, at 10:00, the CPA Anica Torres will host activities for the prevention of cognitive decline. On the same day, at 18:00, the talk ‘Truth or Deception? Learn to Protect Yourself in the Digital Age’, delivered by the National Police's Citizen Participation Unit, will focus on new scams, artificial intelligence, and identity theft. This initiative will be repeated on Friday October 2, at 10:00, at the CPA Silvestre González.
Coinciding with the International Day of Older Persons, on Thursday October 1, AFAB will screen the documentary ‘Learn to Live with Alzheimer’s: A Real Testimony’ at 10:00 at the CPA Anica Torres. At 18:30, the CPA Silvestre González will host a viewing of photographs of Benalmádena Pueblo from the 1950s, in collaboration with the Cultural Association Ben-al-arte.
On Friday 2, at 19:30, the charity fashion show ‘Hearts in Motion’ will take place, in collaboration with AFAB, Cudeca, and ABAD, as well as participating establishments.
One of the main novelties will be the unification of the traditional tribute to seniors. On Saturday October 3, starting at 11:00, users from the four centres will gather at the Hotel Alay for a day of socialising with lunch for 300 people and musical entertainment provided by the orchestra Rompeolas. A bus service will be provided.
“This year we wanted to gather the tributes into a single day and turn it into a great meeting for our seniors. It will be an occasion to recognise their journey, all they have contributed to Benalmádena, and the fundamental role they continue to play in our municipality,” the councillor explained.
The IX Week of Older People will conclude on Sunday October 4, at 17:30, with the ‘Senior Party’ at the CPA Anica Torres. Activities will continue on October 21 with ‘Inmensos’, a tribute show to Rocío Jurado and Raphael, which will offer two performances, at 18:00 and 20:00, at the Casa de la Cultura.
Robles thanked “the work and involvement of the presidents, representatives, users, and all the people who make the daily activities of our centres possible,” and invited the seniors of Benalmádena to participate in a week designed for them.
