The Estepona City Council has already completed over 90% of the work to provide a pavement for the urban section of the Benahavís road, between the Mar and Monte roundabouts and La Alquería. The investment amounts to €1,358,000.
The works to provide pavement on the urban section of the Benahavís road, a long-standing demand from the residents of Estepona, are nearing completion. The Estepona City Council has reported that the work is over 90% complete, with only the planting of trees, landscaping, and minor finishing touches remaining.
The project is located in the section between the Mar and Monte roundabouts and La Alquería, covering 2.3 kilometres. This road, which until a few months ago was under regional ownership, has become municipal following the approval of the corresponding act by the General Directorate of Road Infrastructures of the Ministry of Development, Territory Articulation and Housing of the Junta de Andalucía.
The transfer of ownership has been key for the Estepona City Council to undertake this investment of €1,358,000, aimed at ensuring pedestrian safety in a section that lacked a pavement. According to municipal sources, the work allows for pedestrian connection between the A-7 and La Alquería avenue, as well as linking the various developments in the area, improving mobility for residents.
The completed work has included clearing the path, constructing the platform, excavating and installing stormwater drainage, and renewing public lighting. The pending tasks focus on planting trees and landscaping, as well as minor finishing touches that will not affect the pedestrian use of the new pavement.
This action responds to a historical demand from the local residents, who have long called for a safe pedestrian route on a road with high traffic density. With the completion of the works, the Estepona City Council expects the section to be fully operational in the coming weeks, once the landscaping work is finished.
The municipal investment is part of a broader plan to improve pedestrian infrastructure in the municipality, aiming to promote sustainable mobility and reduce risks for pedestrians. The Estepona City Council has reminded that this project is possible thanks to the transfer of the road by the Junta de Andalucía, an administrative process that has taken several years.
The residents of the affected developments have expressed their satisfaction with the impending completion of the works, which will mark a significant improvement in road safety in the area. With this intervention, the Estepona Council responds to one of the most reiterated demands from local residents' associations, which had repeatedly warned of the dangers of walking along the shoulder of the Benahavís road. The completion of the works represents a step forward in humanising this road, which is now integrated into the urban fabric of the city.
The municipal forecast is that, once the landscaping and minor finishing touches are completed, the new pavement will be permanently open for pedestrian use.
