Villanueva del Trabuco is preparing to experience one of its most unique summer events. The 'Gran Luna 2026', a horse ride taking place at dusk, will be held this Saturday, July 25, with a full quota of 200 participants. The organisation, led by the Caballista Association of Villanueva del Trabuco, has confirmed that the capacity was filled weeks ahead of the date.
The route, approximately 20 kilometres long, runs through flat terrain and accessible paths, allowing for the easy participation of carts and horses. The meeting point is the old inn El Cortijuelo, from where the procession will depart at dusk. During the journey, several stops will be made for the animals to rest and drink water, ensuring their well-being.
One of the attractions of the route is the natural landscape illuminated by the full moon. Riders, arriving from various parts of Andalusia, will be able to enjoy an equestrian experience in a privileged setting. At the end, near the El Polear Business Park, a catering service with food and drinks awaits them, completing a day of camaraderie.
The Caballista Association of Villanueva del Trabuco, founded in 2015, has experienced a revival since 2023, when it renewed its board of directors. Since then, it has promoted activities such as the Agro-Ganaderia Fair and this lunar route, which has become a classic of the summer calendar. Antonio Ortiz, a member of the association, highlighted in statements to the radio that the figure of 200 participants is "appropriate" for everyone to enjoy the evening.
In previous editions, the route included the emblematic Fuente de Los Cien Caños, but that section was discarded several years ago after the area was paved. The organisation has opted for an alternative route that maintains the essence of the night stroll. The activity is supported by the Villanueva del Trabuco Town Hall, which backs this initiative for tourism and cultural promotion.
For the residents of Villanueva del Trabuco and the Nororma region, the 'Gran Luna' is an opportunity to enjoy the natural heritage and equestrian tradition. Participants, many of whom are repeat attendees, appreciate the family atmosphere and the safety of the route. The association is already working on future editions, intending to keep this event alive.
