The Junta of Andalucía creates a commission for water quality at Málaga beaches

The Junta of Andalucía has announced the creation of a commission to monitor and control the quality of waters at the beaches of Málaga. This decision was made during a meeting chaired by the Government delegate in Málaga, Patricia Navarro, alongside officials from the Environment and Beaches departments of coastal municipalities.

Objectives of the Commission

The main objective of this commission is to strengthen coordination between local administrations and the Junta to ensure the quality of bathing waters. Councillors from municipalities such as Málaga, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Marbella, Mijas, and Fuengirola participated in the meeting, as well as territorial delegates from Health and Consumer Affairs, and representatives from Acosol and EMASA.

Patricia Navarro highlighted the importance of establishing a clear roadmap to facilitate the exchange of information and jointly address any contamination incidents that may arise, in order to prevent the closure of bathing areas. The commission will meet bi-monthly to evaluate and propose measures in the short, medium, and long term.

Health Surveillance Programme

The Health and Consumer Delegation carries out a Water Surveillance Programme during the bathing season, which includes periodic controls at various points. These controls consist of visual inspections, sample collection, and analysis to detect possible contaminants, such as E.coli.

In the event of results indicating altered quality levels, the Delegation increases the frequency of sampling in the affected areas to ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect public health. The delegate emphasized the need to improve coordination and advance structural solutions related to sanitation and purification.
