The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall expands its surveillance network with 12 new devices: ten for traffic management and two for monitoring container areas with illegal waste. The investment in the environmental system amounts to 48,357.65 euros.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, has announced the installation of 12 new surveillance cameras at strategic points in the municipality. Ten of them are designated for traffic and mobility management, while the other two will monitor container areas affected by illegal dumping. The announcement was made during a visit to the Local Police Headquarters, where the control centre for all the cameras is located.
The ten traffic devices are distributed among Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar, Benajarafe, and Caleta de Vélez. In the municipal capital, they have been placed on Camino de Remanentes, Camino de Torrox, Avenida Vivar Téllez, and Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, at the roundabout of the El Ingenio shopping centre. In Torre del Mar, they are located on Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, at the football field roundabout; Camino de la Caleta, at the Río Seco roundabout; Calle Cipriano Maldonado Jiménez, and Avenida Andalucía. A camera has also been installed on Calle Campo de la Iglesia in Benajarafe, and another on Avenida Andalucía, at the Caleta Port roundabout.
The remaining two cameras, intended for environmental monitoring, are located on Camino de la Caleta (Baviera entrance) in Caleta de Vélez, and on Calle Puerta de Granada in Vélez-Málaga, with two devices at each point. The selection of these locations was made by the Local Police and the Environmental Department, focusing on areas with a repeated history of illegal waste deposits.
The environmental monitoring project also includes 10 IoT sensors that will allow real-time monitoring of container occupancy levels and generate alerts to optimise collection routes and frequencies. The total budget for this initiative amounts to 48,357.65 euros, VAT included, and includes the cameras, 4G communication infrastructure, sensors, lighting and public address systems, as well as maintenance for 12 months.
Lupiáñez stated that security and coexistence "are also improved by providing resources to those who have to work every day to protect them." The mayor added that surveillance "is an important support tool for security professionals, especially during events like Holy Week, Christmas, or the Night in Vela."
The incorporation of these devices continues the process of expanding the municipal surveillance network initiated two years ago, with which the Town Hall has been increasing technological resources to support the Security Forces and improve response capacity in areas with high concentrations of people.
