The Vélez-Málaga City Council has addressed concerns regarding the new waste fee: there is no single payment date, but each taxpayer will have their own deadline that starts counting upon receiving their notification.
The Councillor for Finance of Vélez-Málaga, Manuel Gutiérrez (PP), appeared this Wednesday to explain the collection procedure for the new waste fee and to refute what he considers "confusing" information spread by the opposition. The councillor insisted that notifications are already being sent out and that there is no common deadline for the entire population.
The system establishes three notification methods. Legal entities and professionals required to interact electronically with the Administration will receive their notifications through this channel, which may also be used for individuals when conditions allow. The remaining taxpayers will receive their notification in paper form at their home, with acknowledgment of receipt.
According to the General Tax Law, if the notification is made between the 1st and 15th of the month, payment can be made until the 20th of the following month; if it arrives between the 16th and the last day of the month, the deadline extends until the 5th of the second following month. "Each resident will have their own deadline, and that deadline starts counting from the moment they receive their notification," Gutiérrez emphasised.
The fee came into effect on 1 January 2026 and in this first year requires individual notifications. The City Council expects that starting from 2027, an annual register and a fiscal calendar will be approved to manage the tax periodically.
For households, estimates suggest bills ranging from 101.86 to 135.54 euros annually. The fee includes a fixed part of 62.66 euros and a variable part that depends on the cadastral value, the area, and the zone of the property. The City Council estimates a revenue close to 7.2 million euros per year.
The measure maintains political tension. PSOE, Vox, Andalucía por Sí, and former Popular Mayor Francisco Delgado have criticised that the new bill is not accompanied by a reduction in the IBI. The PP and GIPMTM coalition responds that the fee derives from the State Law 7/2022 on waste and that the Adjustment Plan prevented lowering the IBI rate from 0.64% to 0.62%.
To resolve doubts, the City Council maintains a specialised office in the Wholesale Market on Estación Street, in addition to the Revenue Board offices in Vélez-Málaga and Torre del Mar. The local government asks taxpayers to pay attention to the date of their own notification and not to a supposed general deadline.
