Torre del Mar hosts this Saturday, September 12, the XIV Multidisciplinary Conference on Geology, Archaeology and Natural Environment, featuring experts from various universities. The meeting, held at the Old Sugar Factory, will address phenomena such as the 'natas' on the beaches.
The building of the Old Sugar Factory in Torre del Mar will host this Saturday September 12, starting at 10:00 AM, the XIV edition of the Multidisciplinary Conference on Geology, Archaeology and Natural Environment, organised by the Chair of Coastal Sciences at the University of Málaga and the Association for the Promotion of Tourism in Axarquía (APTA).
The event will bring together specialists from the universities of Málaga, Granada, and Murcia, as well as other national academic institutions. The councillor of the Vélez-Málaga City Council, David Segura, highlighted the municipal commitment to this initiative and emphasised that politics should contribute to understanding the territory and its roots.
Among the scheduled presentations, the director of the Chair, Paco Franco Duro, will explain the nature of the well-known “natas” or floating aggregates that appear on the beaches of Axarquía. His talk will scientifically address their composition, formation mechanisms, and their possible influence on the quality of bathing waters.
“We want to clarify any doubts or urban legends from a scientific perspective, providing rigorous answers about a phenomenon that generates much interest on our coast,” said Franco Duro.
The programme also includes the presentation “Mathematics to Understand the Earth”, by the professor from the University of Murcia Matías Raja, and a talk on the climatic event from the Middle to Upper Paleolithic in the southern peninsula, by Dr. Jesús Jordá Pardo from UNED.
The researcher from the University of Málaga Lidia Cabello will analyse coastal and climatic changes in the Málaga coastline, while Dr. Francisca Alba Sánchez from the University of Granada will discuss the pinsapares and global change.
The manager of APTA, Elisa Páez, valued the choice of the Old Sugar Factory as a magnificent venue and explained that the association will provide attendees with resources on gastronomy, tourism promotion, and heritage of the region. The coordinator of the conference, Amalia Muñoz Martín, recalled that the initiative started in 2010 linked to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism.
