The Varadero Beach in Torre del Mar will host the XVI Miguel Cano Memorial this Saturday, September 12, the third stage of the II Provincial League of Chalanas, with the participation of fixed-seat rowing clubs from Málaga and a guest from Portugal.
The Varadero Beach, next to the headquarters of the Club de Remo Faro de Torre del Mar, will be the venue for the XVI Miguel Cano Memorial this Saturday, September 12, the third stage of the II Provincial League of Chalanas – Diputación de Málaga. The event will kick off at 17:00 and will continue throughout the afternoon with various heats of competition.
The event, which began in 2008 driven by the local club, pays tribute to Miguel Cano, who was linked to the early rowing competitions that took place during fairs and around the slipway. The deputy mayor of Torre del Mar, Jesús Pérez Atencia, highlighted the special nature of the event:
“This Memorial has become one of the most established events in the province of Málaga and, above all, a permanent tribute to all those people who have kept our relationship with the sea and sport alive.”
Atencia also remembered Miguel Cano's family and valued the evolution of the Club de Remo Faro, encouraging the entity to “continue maintaining that essence and those origins.” Meanwhile, the club's vice president, Antonio Cruz, thanked the support of the Tenencia de Alcaldía de Torre del Mar and the Department of Sports of the Vélez-Málaga City Council, and noted that this edition will bring together “the best fixed-seat rowing clubs from Málaga,” along with a guest club from Portugal.
The Miguel Cano Memorial will feature categories including mixed youth, cadet female and male, junior female and male, and senior female and male. The event continues the II Provincial League of Chalanas, organized by the Asociación del Remo Tradicional (ART) with the support of the Diputación de Málaga, after the initial scheduled events could not take place due to adverse weather conditions.
The club encourages locals, fans, and visitors to come to Varadero Beach this Saturday from 17:00 to enjoy an afternoon of competition and learn about one of the most deeply rooted modalities in the maritime history of the province.
