The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall has presented the project for the future HM Vélez-Málaga Hospital, which will involve an investment of over 40 million euros and generate more than 250 jobs. Construction will begin in September, with the opening scheduled for spring 2028.
The Málaga municipality of Vélez-Málaga will have a new private hospital that promises to strengthen healthcare in the Axarquía region. HM Hospitales presented the project for the HM Vélez-Málaga Hospital at the Town Hall on Tuesday, an infrastructure that will mobilise an investment exceeding 40 million euros and generate over 250 direct and indirect jobs.
Construction will start next September on a 55,000 square metre plot located on Camino de Torrox. The execution will be carried out by the construction company Ferrovial and will have a duration of 20 months, meaning the centre is expected to open in spring 2028. Initially, the hospital will have around 10,000 square metres built, although the project includes plans for future expansions.
The new healthcare centre will have around fifty rooms, approximately 50 consultation rooms, six operating theatres, a medical-surgical Day Hospital, an adult ICU, and emergency services for both adults and children. The service portfolio will include a wide variety of medical specialties, aiming to meet the needs of a region that exceeds 200,000 inhabitants and sees its population increase during the tourist season.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Jesús Lupiáñez, has described the arrival of the hospital as “magnificent news for the present and future of our municipality and the entire region.” Lupiáñez emphasised that the new infrastructure “does not replace public healthcare, but rather complements and expands the existing healthcare offer,” which will reduce trips to Málaga city and provide more healthcare options for residents.
The mayor also praised the work of municipal technicians, especially from the Urban Planning Department, whose efforts have ensured that the project already has the construction license, an essential requirement to start building in September.
For his part, the CEO of HM Hospitales, Alejandro Abarca, explained that the new centre will also be a university hospital, and assured that the project “represents much more than a new healthcare infrastructure,” as it aims to bring high-complexity medicine, cutting-edge technology, and person-centred care to the Axarquía.
During the presentation event, a model of the future hospital was also displayed, which will remain on show for the next few days in the Town Hall courtyard so that residents and visitors can learn about the design and features of this new healthcare infrastructure.
With this project, HM Hospitales strengthens its presence in the province of Málaga, where it already has centres in the capital and Marbella. The arrival of the new hospital in Vélez-Málaga represents a boost for the local economy, both through job creation during construction and the stable jobs it will generate once operational. Additionally, residents of the Axarquía will have access to a top-level healthcare alternative without the need to travel to the capital.
