The athletics club Trops-Cueva de Nerja has harvested 66 medals in three championships held last weekend, including the Absolute and U20 Andalusian in Nerja and the National U18 in Castellón.
Trops-Cueva de Nerja experienced a historic weekend by accumulating 66 medals in three simultaneous competitions. The club, presided over by Enrique López, competed in the Absolute and U20 Andalusian Championships held in Nerja, and in the National U18 Championship held in Castellón.
Absolute Domination at Home: 29 Medals in the Absolute Andalusian
On Saturday, July 4, Nerja hosted the Absolute Andalusian Championship, where Trops-Cueva de Nerja shone as the host. Local athletes achieved 29 medals: 9 golds, 11 silvers, and 9 bronzes.
Among the golds, Leandro Andriá and Una Stancev excelled in high jump, Laura Aguilera in 400m hurdles, Alexis Gastón in shot put and discus, and Julia Griñán in 100m hurdles. Nabil Sebbar and María del Mar Marqués also reached the top of the podium in the 3000m steeplechase, along with Isidro Leyva in pole vault.
The silvers were claimed by Lilian Cazorla (400m), Carolina Durán (long jump), Miguel Collado (800m), and Mirian Gallego (discus), among others. The bronzes were secured by Daniel Hernández (shot put), Paula Molina (200m), and Juan Leyva (pole vault), completing a collective performance.
Success Also in the U20 Andalusian: 28 Medals
On Sunday, July 5, Nerja once again served as the venue for the U20 Andalusian Championship. Trops-Cueva de Nerja repeated its success with 28 medals: 11 golds, 10 silvers, and 7 bronzes.
Leandro Andriá repeated his gold in high jump, while Miguel Collado (800m), Julia Fernández, and Pablo Mancheño (100m) also secured first place. The men's 4x100 relay team, made up of Javier Gómez, Juan Antonio Ortiz, David Gómez, and Pablo Mancheño, took home the gold.
Notable silvers went to Laura Díaz (shot put), Clara Navarro (400m), and Ander Campos (pole vault). The bronzes were won by Marta Caballero (pole vault), Mar Díaz (400m hurdles), and the women's 4x100 relay, among others.
Nine Medals in the National U18, with Andalusian Record
Meanwhile, in Castellón, the National U18 Championship was taking place, where Trops-Cueva de Nerja added 9 medals and 5 finalist positions. The standout performance came from Cristóbal Díaz, who was crowned Spanish champion in discus throw with a mark of 56.35 meters, breaking the Andalusian record for the category.
The five silvers were claimed by Raquel Lobo (long jump and 100m hurdles), Mario Herrera (400m), Sergio López (triple jump), and the men's 4x100 relay. The bronzes were achieved by Lucía Vaca (100m), Leire García (200m), and the women's 4x100 relay.
For the residents of Nerja, this influx of medals is a source of pride and a boost for grassroots sports. The club, which trains at municipal facilities, demonstrates that the local talent pool is in full bloom. The next challenge will be the Absolute Spanish Championship, which will be held in Málaga in the coming weeks, where several athletes will seek to continue adding successes.
