The fire declared on Sunday in El Borge has been controlled, but it came within 80 metres of the La Burrita Baldomera animal shelter and the gardens of three houses. Its owner, Ismael Fernández, recounts the scare.

The fire declared on Sunday at four in the afternoon in the area of La Fuensanta, in El Borge, was controlled in just a couple of hours by the Infoca teams and five aerial units, but the flames reached about 80 metres from the La Burrita Baldomera animal shelter and even to the gardens of three houses in the locality.

The owner of the shelter, Ismael Fernández, was at the beach of Cantarriján, in Maro-Cerrogordo, when he received calls from family and friends. He made the journey in an hour with fear in his heart: "It got close, but luckily there was a ravine in between and the fire didn’t jump over there," he explains.

"If the house burns down, fine, but the animals... I was driving with my heart in my mouth"

Fernández details that the flames reached the gardens of three houses, including his own, and that the firefighters removed wooden railings to prevent the fire from entering. "My cousin saw the flames two metres from her house," he asserts.

The shelter, which now houses 20 animals (guinea pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, goats, and donkeys), has been on adjacent land for some time, a change that proved fortuitous. The former location, where the donkey's stable was, has burned down completely.

Fernández believes that the fire may have started on the road, probably due to a cigarette butt thrown by a driver, although pending the official investigation, it is just a hypothesis. There were no personal injuries, and both the houses and the shelter have been saved.

There are still Infoca teams refreshing the area, but the fire is controlled and its extinction is very close.
