The Axarquía town of Cútar is celebrating this weekend the XXII edition of the Fiesta del Monfí, declared of Provincial Tourist Interest. The event kicks off on Friday with the inauguration of the souk and the unveiling of a sculpture dedicated to the scholar Al-Yayyar.
The town of Cútar is celebrating from this Friday the XXII Fiesta del Monfí, an event declared of Provincial Tourist Interest that this year extends for an extra day, until Sunday. The opening will be marked by the inauguration of the souk and a parade, followed by the unveiling of a sculpture dedicated to the scholar Al-Yayyar, as reported by Diario Sur.
The work, commissioned to the sculptor from Vélez José Casamayor, immortalises the famous scholar from Cútar, whose hidden texts discovered in 2003 placed this Axarquía town on the map of Andalusian heritage. The inaugural day will continue with a showcooking of Andalusian cuisine in the town hall square.
During the three days, attendees will be able to enjoy parades, donkey rides, henna, lectures, children's games, theatrical performances, Sephardic music, fire and magic shows, as well as a large artisan souk. On Saturday there will be tastings of couscous and tajine, and on Sunday, couscous and kid stew. Both days will also feature fried dough, dough tortillas, aguardiente raisins, and sweet muscatel wine.
The programme of parallel activities includes talks and live musical performances. On Saturday 3rd October at 19:30, researcher Amin Chaachoo, arriving from Tétouan, will give a lecture titled 'Andalusian Music, between Emotional Aesthetics and Transcendent Attitude'. On Sunday at the same time, Virgilio Martínez Enamorado from the University of Málaga will present the historical keys behind 'Derivatives of the Cútar Discovery'.
Music will play a prominent role. On Friday at 22:00, the grand inaugural concert will be performed by Mawazin. On Saturday at 20:00, the prestigious Orchestra of the Conservatory of Tétouan, conducted by Amin Chaachoo, will perform, and at 22:00, the voice of Clara Campos will present her Mediterranean project 'Ánfora' live. On Sunday at 13:00, musicians Emilio Villalba and Sara Marina will take the stage, and at 20:30, the closing concert will feature the return of the Orchestra of the Conservatory of Tétouan alongside Amin Chaachoo.
On Saturday, starting at ten in the morning, a chess day will take place with the XXXII Provincial Chess Circuit of the Málaga Provincial Council for FADA ELO, which includes the XXIV Open Chess Villa de Cútar and the XX Children's Tournament Villa de Cútar. Additionally, on Saturday and Sunday at 18:00, visitors can enjoy the theatrical route 'Cálamo y cal, the fate of Al Yayyar', a tour led by local actors that revives the history behind the Andalusian manuscripts and the hidden Quran of Cútar. The Interpretation Centre of the Alquería de Cútar will open its doors with special guided tour hours.
To facilitate access, there will be a shuttle bus service on Saturday and Sunday connecting Málaga city with Cútar, with stops in Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar, and Vélez-Málaga. Buses will depart from Málaga at 11:30 and will return at 20:30, after the main afternoon activities conclude.
