In the Bages region, the Guardia Civil and the Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested three individuals and are investigating a fourth for their alleged involvement in a railway sabotage. The detainees are accused of aggravated damages, public disorder, and belonging to a criminal group.

The investigation began after the sabotage was detected on April 18, 2026, during protests called via social media from April 17 to 19 against a potash mine in the municipality of Súria. An organized group with an environmental extremist character was identified as responsible for the damage to approximately 300 metres of the railway line connecting to the port of Barcelona.

Impact of the Sabotage on Local Communities

Apart from the damage to the railway infrastructure, those involved are said to have affected telecommunications wiring by severing a main fibre optic branch. This action left over 4,000 subscribers in the municipalities of Súria and Cardona without internet service.

The repercussions of these acts have been significant, with a negative impact on municipal properties, public and private infrastructures, and on the activities of the company responsible for the mine. The material damages are estimated at nearly 100,000 euros. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that the sabotage could have compromised the safety of individuals in the area.

Collaboration Between Institutions

The operation has been coordinated by the General Information Commissioner of the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Guardia Civil, under the supervision of the Manresa Court of First Instance. During July, the arrests were made in various localities in the province of Barcelona, and the detainees were brought before the judiciary.

These actions highlight the commitment of both security forces in the fight against violent extremism and the prevention of radicalisation associated with these groups.
