The XVI Fuengirola Offshore Fishing Championship 'Memorial Pedro Cuevas' will bring together around 30 vessels from Andalusia and other parts of Spain from September 10 to 13. The catches will be donated to charitable organizations.
Fuengirola is hosting this week the sixteenth edition of the Fuengirola Offshore Fishing Championship 'Memorial Pedro Cuevas', which will gather around 30 vessels arriving from various points in Andalusia and the rest of Spain. The event is organized by the Fuengirola Offshore Fishing Association, in collaboration with the Fuengirola City Council and the Málaga Provincial Council.
The competition will take place from September 10 to 13. The presentation featured the Sports Councillor, Julio Rodríguez; the provincial sports deputy, Juan Rosas; and the president of the organizing association, Plácido Antequera.
The councillor highlighted the consolidation of this event in the city's sports calendar and its contribution to promoting Fuengirola as a destination for water sports. “Fuengirola looks to the sea and has excellent conditions to host competitions related to water sports. This championship is already a fully established event and is very much cherished by our city,” Rodríguez noted.

The councillor thanked the association for their efforts in organizing a competition that “each edition seeks to improve and offer participants the best possible experience.” He also emphasized the charitable nature of the event: the catches will be delivered to charitable associations, a tradition linked to the identity of the championship and the memory of Pedro Cuevas, former Sports Councillor of Fuengirola.
The provincial sports deputy, Juan Rosas, expressed the Provincial Council's support for an event “that continues to grow and consolidate each year.” He recalled that in recent editions, around 800 kilos of catches were donated to social entities.
For his part, Plácido Antequera explained that among the participants there will be vessels from different points along the Andalusian coast and expressed hope that the sea conditions will be favourable during the two days of competition.
The programme kicks off on Thursday, September 10 with the reception of the vessels, a skippers' meeting, and a welcome drink. The competition will take place on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12, with departures at 8:00 AM and returns to port at 7:00 PM on both days. The championship will conclude on Sunday, September 13 with a lunch and awards ceremony at the Las Palmeras Hotel starting at 1:30 PM.
