The Fuengirola City Council has terminated the current urban bus service contract and has tendered a new one to increase the fleet, reduce waiting times, and expand the routes of the five lines. The service will remain free for residents.
The Fuengirola City Council will increase the number of urban buses and the frequencies to reduce waiting times. This was announced by the mayor, Ana Mula, accompanied by the Councillor for Mobility, Isabel González, who explained that the government team has terminated the current Urban Transport service contract and has tendered a new one to meet the growing demand and optimise connectivity between the five routes.
“Three years ago, we made a significant commitment to urban public transport. A new service, with a renewed hybrid fleet and, as I promised to the residents of Fuengirola, free for residents through the Citizen Card. That is a reality. But the truth is that the experience of these three years has not been as expected or desired. The increase in users has been very large. At the same time, the current concessionaire has not met expectations, and we have made the decision to terminate the contract and tender it again,” the mayor stated.
The new tender maintains the free service for residents and the five current lines, although with modifications. Line 1 will cover the upper part of Miramar Norte; Line 2 will run from Avenida de Andalucía to Calle Málaga, near the Fuengirola Oeste Health Centre; Line 3 will reach the Los Boliches Health Centre; Line 4 will go to the Los Pacos Health Centre; and Line 5 will extend its route to Calle Sauces.
All routes will see an increase in their vehicles. Line 1 will go from five to six hybrid buses, while the others, which currently have one vehicle each, will double their fleet. Additionally, midibuses and 100% electric minibuses will be incorporated into lines 2, 3, 4, and 5, so that 93% of the fourteen vehicles will be eco-friendly.
As a result of the increase in vehicles, the frequencies will be reduced to thirteen minutes on Line 1, twenty on Lines 2, 3, and 5, and fifteen on Line 4.
The public offer will be open on the State Contracting Portal until September 16. The initial bidding price is 44,913,978.33 euros for a total period of ten years.
“We are increasing frequencies, expanding the fleet, reaching more points in the city, improving sustainability by implementing fully electric buses, and maintaining the free service for residents. In short, we are renewing our commitment to public transport and scaling the service to the Fuengirola of today and the next ten years,” Mula concluded.
