The Estepona City Council offered six municipal plots to the central Government six months ago to build 109 affordable homes and has still not received a reply.
The Estepona City Council continues to await a response from the Government of Spain following the offer of six municipal plots for the construction of 109 affordable homes (VPO) in the city. The initiative, approved by the Plenary six months ago, has not received a response, leaving it unclear whether the central Executive will accept the land.
The plots, suitable for protected housing projects, are located in Casas del Padrón, Llanos de la Boladilla, and Camino de Cortes. The municipal proposal was processed earlier this year following the Government's announcement to mobilise up to €23 billion in public and private funds to stimulate housing supply and finance the construction of 15,000 units per year in Spain through the 'España Crece' fund.
The mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, explained at the time that, “based on the legal principle of collaboration between administrations,” these plots were made available to the central Executive “so that, after the necessary valuation, they can be considered for the construction of the announced homes, allowing Estepona to benefit from this measure announced by the Government.”
“We want to facilitate the Government in expediting the processing of their project so that our city can also participate in it,” the mayor stated.
However, six months later, there has been no communication regarding this with the City Council, which is unaware if the central Executive is willing to accept the land and promote the construction of these homes.
The offered plots are part of a pool of land that the City Council is working on to activate initiatives for protected housing. Specifically, they include two plots in Casas del Padrón (for 22 and 23 VPO), two in Llanos de la Boladilla (for 9 and 17 homes), and two in Camino de Cortes (for 17 and 21 homes).
The municipal government team has prioritised measures since 2011 to facilitate access to housing for those facing greater difficulties. As a result of these policies, a hundred VPO have been built and delivered in the Juan Benítez area. Now, after years of work to secure land, mechanisms are being established that will provide the city with more than 1,200 protected homes. The first VPO for Camino de Cortes are already being tendered, and licenses are being processed for the Vimpyca Foundation to build 117 homes on two plots in Camino de Cortes Sur.
