Mayor Ana Mula and Housing Councillor Rocío Díaz have handed over the keys to 24 flats on Calle Begoña, aimed at those under 35, with rents below market rates.
The Mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, and the Housing Councillor of the Junta de Andalucía, Rocío Díaz, delivered the 24 new Municipal Support Homes on Tuesday on Calle Begoña, in the Carvajal area. From August 1, 24 young families from the municipality under 35 years old will be able to occupy these homes under an affordable rental scheme, a response to the difficulties of accessing housing in the free market.
The development, co-financed by the Next Generation European Funds, is part of the Municipal Housing Access Plan. The total cost of the project has reached €3,868,581.94, of which 28.86% has been contributed by the European Union. The construction company Glesa has been responsible for carrying out the work, which lasted 547 days from its start in November 2024.
During the handover event, Mula highlighted the importance of these policies: “Fuengirola is a united, committed town that meets its tax obligations and ensures that everyone’s money is used for such noble purposes as providing 24 families with a decent roof at an affordable price, allowing them to build their lives in our municipality.” The mayor emphasized that tenants will be able to “live in peace, go to work without the worry of not making ends meet, and start a vital family project.”
The flats feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a terrace, as well as twelve parking spaces in the basement. The building has been constructed on a municipal plot of 3,376.51 square meters. The development is exclusively aimed at young people with economic difficulties, who will access a rent far below the prices in the free market on the Costa del Sol.
With this handover, the Fuengirola City Council has now delivered 65 municipal support homes during this term, all under a temporary affordable rental scheme. The council is already processing the construction of another 65 in the Torreblanca area, aiming to continue expanding the public housing offer. Mula reminded interested Fuengirola residents that they must be registered in the Municipal Housing Demand Register for future promotions, a procedure that can be done in person at office 1 of the El Boquetillo Mayor's Office or through the municipal electronic headquarters.
Councillor Rocío Díaz praised the collaboration between administrations to make such projects possible, which alleviate the housing pressure faced by young people in the province. “It is an example of how European funds translate into real solutions for families,” she noted. The Junta de Andalucía has supported the initiative through the Housing Department, which has participated in the coordination and financing of the plan.
Affordable housing has become one of the main concerns in Fuengirola, a municipality on the Costa del Sol where rental prices have seen a significant increase in recent years. The City Council has committed to building public housing on municipal land as a tool to retain young residents and prevent the expulsion of residents due to the lack of affordable options. The 24 new homes in Carvajal add to those already delivered in other areas of the municipality, such as the developments in El Boquetillo and Los Boliches.
The selected tenants have met the requirements established in the call for applications, which prioritise young people with limited incomes and ties to the municipality. The rent is set based on the income of each household, ensuring it does not exceed a percentage of their earnings. The rental period is temporary, with the possibility of renewal as long as the conditions that granted access to the housing are maintained.
The City Council expects that the construction of the 65 homes in Torreblanca will begin in the coming months, once administrative procedures are completed. With this new development, Fuengirola will reach 130 municipal support homes in this term, a figure that places it among the Andalusian municipalities with the highest public investment in affordable housing per capita. The mayor announced that the council is studying new municipal plots to continue expanding the public rental stock.
For young Fuengirola residents interested in future promotions, registration in the Municipal Housing Demand Register is the first step. The procedure is free and allows the City Council to understand real demand and adjust future promotions to the needs of residents. The El Boquetillo office is open Monday to Friday in the morning, and the electronic headquarters is operational 24 hours a day.
