Storm Leonardo keeps the Guadiaro River at red level as it passes through Cortes de la Frontera, with a risk of overflow. The flow stabilises at 2.01 metres, far from the historical maximum of 4.76 metres recorded on February 4.

The province of Málaga remains on maximum hydrological alert this Friday following the passage of storm Leonardo. The Guadiaro River, as it flows through Cortes de la Frontera, remains at red level, indicating a real danger of overflow and flooding in inhabited areas and potential disruptions to communication routes.

Data provided by the Hidrosur network of the Junta de Andalucía shows that, early in the day, the flow of the Guadiaro at the transfer point to the Majaceite was at 2.01 metres in height, with an approximate flow of 107.66 cubic metres per second. Although these figures show a trend towards stabilisation, authorities warn that the situation remains critical and new rises cannot be ruled out if residual rainfall intensifies.

The red level activated by the river control network implies that significant rises have been recorded with the capacity to flood inhabited areas and cause interruptions in land communications. Emergency services have intensified monitoring of the riverbed and recommend that the population exercise extreme caution, especially in riverside areas and in the most exposed zones.

The historical maximum of the Guadiaro River at this point was reached on February 4, when the water height reached 4.76 metres. Since then, the level has significantly decreased, but the red alert remains due to the possibility of new rains causing a rise in flow.

The situation in Cortes de la Frontera is part of a broader scenario in Andalucía, where around fifteen rivers were on red alert in the early hours of the day, according to sources from the Automatic Hydrological Information System (SAIH). The Guadalquivir basins, the Mediterranean basins of Andalucía, as well as the Guadalete and Barbate rivers, present multiple points with critical levels.

In the province of Cádiz, stretches of the Guadalete as it passes through Jerez and the confluence known as the Junta de los Ríos (Guadalete and Majaceite) also register critical levels. Likewise, numerous points of the Guadalquivir and its tributaries in Seville, Córdoba, and Jaén maintain very high flows, keeping emergency services on alert.

Local authorities and Civil Protection recommend that residents of Cortes de la Frontera and areas near the Guadiaro riverbed avoid unnecessary travel, not approach the banks, and follow official warnings at all times. It is also advised to prepare an emergency kit and know evacuation routes in case the situation worsens.

Weather forecasts and hydrological models will determine the evolution of the river in the coming hours. Although some points show a trend towards stabilisation, the possibility of new rises cannot be ruled out while residual rainfall persists. Emergency services maintain continuous monitoring and will update alerts according to the evolution of the flow and the state of the river network.

For residents of the Serranía de Ronda and, in particular, of Cortes de la Frontera, the red alert serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the need to be prepared. Authorities remind that prevention and caution are the best tools to avoid personal and material tragedies.

It is recommended to periodically consult the official channels of the Junta de Andalucía, Civil Protection, and the Town Hall of Cortes de la Frontera to keep informed about the evolution of the alert and the measures adopted at each moment.
