Educational platforms and unions have called for a general educational strike in Andalusia on the upcoming 11th of November, following a meeting held in Antequera on July 18.
The Noviembre Verde platform and Andalusian Universities for the Public, along with the Student Union, have announced a general educational strike in Andalusia for the upcoming 11th of November. The decision was made during an Andalusian Meeting for Public Education held on July 18 in Antequera, where teachers, students, families, and public school workers discussed the critical situation of the Andalusian educational system.
The organisers denounce that since the arrival of the PP to the Junta de Andalucía, 3,528 public classrooms have been eliminated at various educational levels. Furthermore, Andalusia has the second highest student-to-teacher ratio, surpassed only by Madrid, and ranks last in investment per student, with 10% less than the state average. This is compounded by the approval of the Law on the University System of Andalusia (LUPA), which they consider another step towards the privatisation of public universities.
The government agreement between PP and Vox has also been pointed out as a threat, as it includes measures such as the concertation of baccalaureate, which the groups interpret as a direct attack on public education. During the meeting, attendees discussed a reivindicative table and agreed on the steps to follow for the next school year.
The Student Union defended the need for an indefinite strike, following the example of mobilisations in País Valencià, Catalonia, and Madrid. Ultimately, the call for a general educational strike on November 11 was approved, which could be the first step of a broader mobilisation if the demands are not addressed.
The organisers have called for massive participation from the Andalusian educational community, with provincial and centre assemblies to ensure a democratic and united mobilisation. They believe that the situation of public education in Andalusia is unsustainable and that a decisive blow is needed to reverse privatising policies.
The strike on November 11 aims to halt educational activity at all levels, from early childhood to university, and demand a 100% public, inclusive, and quality education. The organisers hope that this day will mark the beginning of an educational rebellion against the PP and Vox government in the Junta de Andalucía.
The groups have highlighted the importance of unity and coordination among all involved organisations to achieve effective mobilisation. The strike adds to other similar calls in other autonomous communities, in a context of growing discontent over cuts and educational policies of the regional governments.
