The City Council of Fuengirola collaborates with Alcoholics Anonymous to promote its resources. The town has three groups and 13 weekly meetings.
The City Council of Fuengirola, through the Families, Equality and Social Welfare Department, continues its collaboration with Alcoholics Anonymous to bring the recovery program of this organization and the support resources available for individuals with alcohol problems and their families closer to the public.
The Councillor for Families, Equality and Social Welfare, Cristina Bornao, held a press conference this Tuesday alongside paediatrician Pascual Caballero and several members of the organization to announce their groups, schedules, and contact methods.
Caballero highlighted the impact of excessive alcohol consumption on health, work, family, and social life. "Alcohol has always been present in our society during celebrations and toasts; it is part of our history, but its abuse has individual health consequences for those who consume it, and it also has a significant impact on work, family, and social spheres. It is behind many problems of exclusion, conflicts, gender violence, and crime," he stated.
The doctor emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks and focused on the stigma surrounding alcoholism: "It is a serious social problem that is somewhat hidden due to the fear of discussing it, because of the stigma it entails and the fear of being labeled as a vice-ridden person rather than a victim of the problem."
Bornao explained that the City Council maintains "close collaboration with social groups and entities in our locality" and that "today we are here to make known the work they do, where they are located, and how those individuals or families with a member in this situation can get in touch with them."
Currently, Fuengirola has three Alcoholics Anonymous groups that hold 13 weekly meetings at different locations in the city.
The Nueva Luz group meets at the Las Rampas complex, in a venue provided by the City Council. It holds an open and informative meeting on Mondays from 20:00 to 22:00, while closed meetings for its members take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the same time.
The Despertar group is located on Salvador Rodríguez Navas street, in a venue provided by the Hermandad del Carmen. Their meetings are on Saturdays from 19:30 to 21:00, with an open session on the last Saturday of each month.
The Fuengirola English group is found on Nueva street, in a venue provided by Lux Mundi. They meet daily at 12:00, except on Wednesdays (at 10:30 and 19:00) and Saturdays (at 12:00 and 19:00).
