Fuengirola City Council has awarded Tuberías y montajes San José the first phase of the renovation of the David Meca pool, with a budget of €537,701. The works will begin on 1st September and will last for 55 days, with the facility closed to the public.
The Fuengirola City Council has awarded the first phase of the renovation of the David Meca pool, an initiative aimed at extending the lifespan of a facility that has been in operation for nearly 20 years. The work, which will commence on 1st September, will require the venue to remain closed for approximately two months.
The company responsible for the works will be Tuberías y montajes San José, which secured the contract for an amount of €537,701.05, about €90,000 less than initially anticipated. The execution period will be 55 days, 22 days fewer than stipulated in the conditions document.
The mayor, Ana Mula, visited the facilities alongside the councillors for Sports and Urban Planning, Julio Rodríguez and Rocío Arriaga, and explained that this first intervention focuses on the environmental adaptation of the pool area, including the installation of dehumidification systems.
“Over the nearly 20 years of this facility's life, there has been a logical wear and tear. Although it has had regular maintenance, it is time for a more in-depth intervention to extend the life of the venue. We will carry out this global action in phases to disrupt the activities that take place here as little as possible,” Mula stated.
During the construction period, the Department of Sports has extended the hours for free swimming at the other municipal indoor pool, the María Peláez, so that regular users can continue to practice their sport. The new hours will be from 12:00 to 16:00 and from 19:00 to 22:00 Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.
The mayor highlighted that this action is part of a broader plan to improve the sports infrastructure in the municipality. So far this year, the government team has invested nearly €1 million in the Elola Complex, the largest sports facility in Fuengirola, including the renovation of skylights in the pavilions, improvements to accessibility at the entrance from Calle Miguel Bueno, and the replacement of the false ceilings in the changing rooms of the David Meca pool.
“This is a good example of the commitment my team has to sports and to the athletes of our city, both those who practice for fun in our facilities to stay fit, and those who carry the name of our city around the world professionally,” concluded Ana Mula.
Users attending the David Meca pool should take into account the temporary closure and plan their training at the María Peláez pool, whose extended hours will remain in effect while the works are ongoing.
