Alezeiateatro, the company from the Maravillas School of Benalmádena, will compete for the top award in school theatre in Spain. They will travel to Sagunto on September 18 to represent 'Assembly of Women'.

The company Alezeiateatro, founded in 2006 as an educational project of the Humanities Department of Maravillas School of Benalmádena, has been selected as a finalist in the XIX National Classical Theatre Competition, organised by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports. This is the highest award for school and youth theatre in Spain, according to Diario Sur.

The group will travel on September 18 to Sagunto (Valencia) to perform 'Assembly of Women', by Aristophanes, with which they have been chosen as one of the two finalists in the Greek/Latin Comedy category. This recognition comes in a very special year, as the company celebrates its 20 years of history.

In its two decades of existence, Alezeiateatro has accumulated over 70 awards in provincial, regional, and national competitions. Among them, the First National Award for Classical Theatre won in 2014 with 'The Suppliants', by Aeschylus, in the Greek tragedy category stands out. Since 2008, it has been selected in several editions of the national competition and has also achieved second prizes in Greek tragedy, Latin comedy, and Greco-Latin short plays.

The project is still led by its founders, Juan Manuel Castillo Cerdán and Desirée Pérez Fernández, who are in charge of the youth workshop and the adult company. Their philosophy, as the company explains, is to “understand theatre as an educational tool, a meeting space, and a means of personal and collective growth”.

The anniversary will be celebrated during the 2026-2027 academic year with various activities. After the final in Sagunto, the House of Culture of Benalmádena will host the official inauguration on September 24, featuring the Italian company AunqueArdaTroyA, which will stage 'Miles Gloriosus. The Braggart Soldier', by Plautus. There will be a performance for students and another open to the public until full capacity is reached.

On September 26, Alezeiateatro will again perform 'Assembly of Women' at the closing of the Málaga Amateur Theatre Festival (FETAMA). The 2027 programme includes a masterclass by Ángel Calvente on March 11 at Maravillas School, the premiere of the documentary 'Alezeiateatro: 20 years of theatre, education, and community' on April 3, and a theatrical project open to the entire educational community and the municipality.
