The company from Benalmádena celebrates its 20 years with a special programme and will travel to Sagunto on September 18 to represent 'Assembly of Women' as a finalist in the national competition.
The company Alezeiateatro, linked to the Maravillas School in Benalmádena, faces the 2026/2027 academic year with a special programme to commemorate its two decades of history. The group has been selected as one of the two finalists in the Greek/Latin Comedy category of the XIX National Classical Greco-Latin Theatre Competition, called by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.
On September 18, the company will travel to Sagunto to represent Assembly of Women, by Aristophanes. The Councillor for Culture of Benalmádena, Jésica Trujillo, has congratulated the members for this achievement and for a career that has maintained a close connection with the cultural life of the municipality.
“It is a pride to have in our municipality a project that has managed to bring theatre to several generations and continues to carry the name of Benalmádena to stages and national competitions,” highlighted Trujillo.
The councillor has emphasised that this recognition coincides with the start of the celebration of the twentieth anniversary. “It has been 20 years creating culture from Benalmádena, bringing the performing arts closer to young people and demonstrating that theatre is also coexistence, solidarity, and a magnificent tool for transmitting values,” she noted.
The Councillor for Education, María Luisa Robles, has highlighted the educational nature of a project born in the classrooms and currently brings together more than a hundred participants including students, alumni, families, teachers, and staff from the centre.
“Alezeiateatro is a magnificent example of everything that can be achieved when education and culture walk hand in hand. Behind every performance, there is learning, effort, teamwork, creativity, and young people who find in theatre a different way to grow and develop,” emphasised Robles.
The company, founded in 2006 by Juan Manuel Castillo Cerdán and Desirée Pérez Fernández, has accumulated more than 70 recognitions in provincial, regional, and national competitions. Among them, the First National Prize for Classical Theatre obtained in 2014 with The Suppliants, by Aeschylus, in the category of Greek tragedy stands out.
The anniversary programme includes the official inauguration on September 24 at the Casa de la Cultura in Benalmádena, with the invited group Summa Cavea Itálica and their play Miles Gloriosus. The Braggart Soldier, by Plautus. There will be a performance for students and another open to the public until full capacity is reached.
On September 26, Alezeiateatro will again represent Assembly of Women at the closing of the Amateur Theatre Festival of Málaga (FETAMA). In 2027, a masterclass by Ángel Calvente is scheduled for March 11 at the Maravillas School, and the premiere of the documentary Alezeiateatro: 20 years of theatre, education and community, produced by Streetlights Productions, will take place on April 3.
The group's trajectory has also had a charitable aspect, with benefit performances aimed at entities such as the Cudeca Foundation, the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), Upendo Face, ACAE Hospital Clowns, and AFIBRO+. The Benalmádena Town Hall collaborates in the celebration along with the Maravillas School, Alezeiateatro, and FETAMA.
