Benalmádena Marina is hosting the thirtieth edition of the International Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament this weekend, featuring two rounds and an Open format. The competition will kick off on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30.
Benalmádena Marina will bring together enthusiasts and vessels for the thirtieth edition of the International Deep-Sea Fishing Tournament this weekend. The event, taking place on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30, will consist of two rounds and will be Open format, according to the rules of the Spanish Federation of Fishing and Casting and the IGFA.
The councillor for the Marina, José Luis Bergillos, expressed his satisfaction at reaching three decades of history: “It is a tremendous satisfaction to reach the thirtieth edition of a tournament that is already part of the history of our Marina and has managed to maintain its appeal over the years.”
Bergillos emphasised that the event “positions Benalmádena as a meeting point for lovers of sport fishing and the sea,” and reminded everyone that “nautical and sporting activities are an essential part of our Marina's identity.”
The competition will start at 8:00 AM on both days. On Saturday, vessels must return to port by 6:00 PM, while on Sunday the deadline will be 5:00 PM. The fishing area will centre around the Marina and extend up to 25 miles from the coast and 50 miles parallel to it.
The regulations include species such as yellowfin tuna, striped tuna, albacore, bonito, dorado, and marlin, with minimum weights required for catches to be valid. Weighing will take place at the official scale of the Marina Captaincy.
Prizes will be awarded in two categories: largest catch and highest total weight, the latter requiring a minimum of two catches. The top three will receive traditional gold, silver, and bronze hooks, along with trophies and gifts from collaborating entities.
Social programming will kick off this Friday, August 28 at 7:30 PM with participant reception, documentation handout, skippers' meeting, and a welcome cocktail at the Benalmádena Nautical Centre. On Saturday at 9:00 PM, there will be a tuna-themed gathering in the Captaincy courtyard, and on Sunday from 9:00 PM, the Hotel Alay will host the closing ceremony and awards presentation.
Bergillos has invited locals and visitors to come to the marina during these days: “Enjoy the atmosphere and share in a competition that unites sport, tradition, and passion for the sea.” The councillor reiterated the aim of continuing to enhance the tournament so that it remains “a reference within the nautical and sporting calendar of Benalmádena.”
