The Málaga town of Istán will host the seventh edition of 'La Velá' on August 29 and 30, a night festival with concerts in iconic spots illuminated by candles. Councillor Sandra Extremera and Mayor José Miguel Marín present an event aimed at attracting tourism and boosting the local economy.
Istán will celebrate the seventh edition of 'La Velá' on August 29 and 30, a night festival that transforms the most iconic corners of the municipality into musical stages lit only by candlelight. The event, which started in 2019, is supported by the Diputación de Málaga.
The provincial councillor Sandra Extremera presented the festival alongside the mayor of Istán, José Miguel Marín, highlighting the originality of a format where performances take place outdoors, with the sound of water in the background and in the municipality's natural and heritage sites.
“The importance of supporting these unique events that become a tourist attraction and contribute to the economic development of the municipality and the Sierra de las Nieves region,” Extremera noted.
The mayor emphasized that 'La Velá' was created to showcase the natural charms of Istán and that residents are heavily involved in its organization, decorating houses and streets with flowers and lights.
The program will kick off on Friday, August 29 at 8:00 PM with violinist Alex Choi at the Las Herrizas natural viewpoint, overlooking the Río Verde reservoir. At 11:00 PM, this same artist will perform again on Marbella Street.
At 9:30 PM, the Boehm Clarinet Quartet will perform at the Casa de la Juventud viewpoint. A mariachi group will entertain Marbella Street from 9:45 PM and will move to the El Chorro fountain and washhouse at 11:15 PM. The voice of Rosalía La Lía will liven up El Pozo square starting at 10:00 PM.
At the Torre del Escalante, in the heart of the urban area, there will be a piano and voice recital at 10:30 PM. The municipal square, next to the Church of San Miguel, will host the group Il Sono, made up of three male voices, at 10:45 PM. The Friday event will conclude in the Plaza de Andalucía, in front of the Town Hall, with a concert by singer-songwriter Carmen París starting at 12:30 AM.
On Saturday, August 30, music will begin at 9:30 PM at the Mirador de la Juventud with Redwolf, while a wind quartet will perform at El Chorro at 10:15 PM. At 10:30 PM, Diego Magdaleno will present his comedy show at El Altillo, and at 10:45 PM, the town square will fill with jazz from Adriano Santos.
The Torre del Escalante will open its doors at 11:15 PM to host Voces del Musical, and Redwolf will reappear on Marbella Street at 11:30 PM. The grand finale will be provided by Los Barrieros del Sur in the Plaza de Andalucía at 12:45 AM.
“La Velá is not just a cultural proposal, but a complete experience that brings together art, heritage, nature, and hospitality; in short, a must-attend event for those who appreciate culture in its most authentic, close, and transformative expression,” Marín concluded.
The event takes place at various points throughout the municipality, so it is recommended to arrive early to enjoy the walks between concerts. Access to all performances is free.
