The final stretch of the Málaga Metro extension is progressing with a traffic diversion on Eugenio Gross. Starting Tuesday, 29 September, a new phase of work will begin that will require modifications to vehicle circulation and the city’s urban bus lines.
The works, taking place between Martínez de la Rosa and Velarde streets, are coordinated by the Málaga City Council and the Public Works Agency. This stretch is crucial for diverting affected services and constructing the guide wall necessary for the tunnel screens.
Traffic diversions and modifications to public transport
With the start of this phase of works, a traffic diversion will be implemented. Vehicles travelling north must take Séneca street or Barcelona avenue to rejoin Blas de Lezo, while southbound cars coming from Blas de Lezo will continue along Camino de Suárez and Moraima street.
Bus lines 15 and 18 will also see changes to their routes, with buses travelling along Barcelona avenue instead of Eugenio Gross. The stop located on the latter street will be moved to Martínez de la Rosa. This modification has been agreed upon with the Málaga Transport Company (EMT).
Maintaining pedestrian accessibility and additional details
Despite the traffic diversions, pedestrian accessibility in the area is guaranteed. Routes for pedestrians, as well as access to buildings and businesses, will remain operational during this phase of the works. This means that access for residents and shops will not be interrupted despite the occupation of the roadway.
Access to Domingo Savio and Vicente Ferrer streets will also be adjusted. Domingo Savio street will maintain entry from Berrocal street, and exit will be allowed both from Berrocal and Filipinas street. Vicente Ferrer street will have entry and exit only via Filipinas. These accesses will be restricted to authorised vehicles and those not exceeding five metres in length. This new traffic configuration will remain in place for the duration of this phase of the works.
The third stretch of the Málaga Metro extension to the Civil Hospital and future Virgen de la Esperanza Hospital is 510 metres long and extends from the intersection of Blas de Lezo and Martínez de la Rosa streets to Simón Bolívar avenue. The construction of the Civil Hospital station is part of this project, which aims to improve connectivity in the area through public transport. This project is co-financed by the 2021-2027 Feder Operational Programme.
