The First Vice President and Minister of Presidency, Health and Emergencies of Andalusia, Antonio Sanz, highlighted today, on the occasion of World Pharmacist Day, the advances in communication between pharmacies and Primary Care in the region. This effort aims to facilitate the management of treatments and improve patient care.
Improvement in Interprofessional Communication
Since February, a Project for Improving Interprofessional Communication has been developed, allowing incidents detected during dispensing in pharmacies to be communicated directly to Primary Care professionals. According to Sanz, this prevents the patient from acting as an intermediary when informing about problems with their treatment.
Between February 17 and September 16, 2026, this tool has recorded 87,740 clinical communications and managed 978,269 treatment renewal requests from pharmacies. Of these communications, 63,483 were made by pharmacists, while others were made by doctors and nursing professionals.
The tool, which is part of Diraya, allows pharmacists to send communications to the prescribing professional, prioritising urgencies and enabling the inclusion of specific details about each case.
Data on Requests and Analysis
The reasons for communication include the lack of medications in pharmacies and issues regarding the duration and administration of treatments. In total, 30,368 communications have been recorded due to the lack of availability of medications.
By province, Málaga stands out with 15,589 communications and has recorded 187,274 treatment renewal requests. Sevilla and Cádiz follow in numbers.
The communication model not only improves patient care but also opens the possibility of integrating these functionalities into the electronic prescription at the national level, facilitating communication between different health systems.
On the occasion of World Pharmacist Day, Sanz acknowledged the work of more than 14,500 pharmacists who perform various functions in healthcare, from dispensing medications to detecting health problems and improving treatment adherence.
