In Málaga, the Andalusian Government has announced the review of the Water Law with the aim of strengthening the water security of the community. The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Consolación Vera, made this announcement during her participation in the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Association of Water Supply and Sanitation of Andalucía (ASA Andalucía).
Review of the regulations and new resources
Deputy Minister Vera highlighted that the review of the Water Law will adapt the regulations to current realities, ensuring better supply and greater preparedness for periods of drought. According to Vera, the reform will allow for a more modern and dynamic regulation, thus reflecting the urgency of addressing water scarcity.
The update of the law will be accompanied by the promotion of the Sustainable Irrigation Law, as part of a comprehensive approach to water management. This review is seen as necessary due to the increasing water scarcity.
Investments and actions in Málaga
The Deputy Minister also mentioned the importance of modernising hydraulic infrastructures and improving the efficiency of supply networks. In 2022, the Government mobilised over 500 million euros in water-related infrastructure projects.
Among the strategic initiatives highlighted for Málaga, Vera mentioned the Water Motorway, which will be co-financed between Benalmádena and Torremolinos, as well as improvements in several Drinking Water Treatment Plants (ETAP) and the promotion of tertiary treatments in wastewater treatment plants to increase the availability of regenerated water.
Vera concluded her speech by congratulating ASA Andalucía on its 40 years of contributions and reiterated the Government's commitment to continue collaborating in the management of the urban water cycle.
