The NGO Infancia Solidaria is looking for host families for two minors with heart conditions, one 8 years old from Morocco and another 13 from Honduras, who will arrive in the first half of October accompanied by their mothers.
Six families from the province of Málaga have expressed interest in hosting the two girls with heart conditions who will be operated on at the Materno Infantil Hospital in the capital, one 8 years old from Morocco and the other 13 from Honduras. This was confirmed to Diario Sur by the coordinator of the NGO Infancia Solidaria, Manuel Cano, after the association issued two urgent calls on Thursday to find a temporary home for the minors as soon as possible.
The two girls will arrive in Málaga in the first half of October accompanied by their respective mothers, meaning each host family will welcome two people for an approximate period of three months. The stay will depend on the medical needs of each treatment and the aftermath of the surgeries. They will not return to their home countries until the doctors give the green light.
The coordinator of Infancia Solidaria explained that the next step is to interview the interested families. "We talk to the families, we conduct an in-home interview, we want to ensure that they meet the ideal conditions to host mothers and daughters; often people have very good intentions, but sometimes they do not meet the necessary conditions and we are not going to burden a family with that," Cano pointed out, adding: "We are very grateful to these families, now we need to conduct an interview to confirm that they meet the ideal conditions."
The process includes understanding the family unit, if there are children, and the characteristics of the home, as well as providing a certificate that verifies the absence of sexual offences, a document required by the Ministry of Justice. Cano emphasized that this is not about creating a problem for anyone: "We appreciate it, of course, but we are not going to create a problem for anyone."
The two minors are coming to undergo surgery for their heart conditions because their countries lack the necessary technical and human resources. "The two girls will come to have surgery for their heart conditions, they cannot be operated on in their countries, they lack the technical and human means," the coordinator indicated.
Along with them, a one-year-old baby from Mauritania will also arrive, who already has a host family: a couple of retired doctors from Puerto de la Torre who hosted a Venezuelan girl two years ago. "We already have a host family for him, it is an experience that can be very beautiful and many people repeat it. We have chosen a family of retired doctors from Puerto de la Torre, who hosted a Venezuelan girl two years ago. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts," Cano said.
Since Cano became the coordinator of Infancia Solidaria, sixteen minors have already undergone surgery at the Materno. The NGO has the support of the Casares Town Hall, which in recent years has recognized its work with the Blas Infante Casares Solidario Award, a monetary award that the association has used to cover the stays of children who have undergone surgery in Málaga. He also thanked the Cooperation Fund of the Junta, an organization to which they propose the candidate children and which must approve their arrival on the Costa del Sol. "We hope everything goes well and they return home happy," he emphasized.
Regarding the medical timelines, Cano detailed that, although the minors come with a diagnosis from their home countries, this is confirmed here, which takes a few days, "then there is the time for the surgery and recovery, which usually lasts between seven and ten days, unless there is a complication, and an additional month is needed to return home after the final check-up to ensure the minor is well."
