The Port Authority of Málaga has approved the extension until 2057 for the club's headquarters, which will invest €9 million to modernise its facilities and add 800 new members without raising fees.

The board of directors of the Port Authority of Málaga approved this Friday the extension of the administrative concession of the Real Club Mediterráneo for 30 years, until 31 December 2057. The measure, reported by Diario Sur, covers a plot of 12,102 square meters in the port area where the social building, offices, swimming pools, sports courts, and restaurants of the entity are located.

The club, founded in 1873, has designed a strategic plan to modernise its infrastructure and finance the extension. The total investment amounts to €9 million: €3.12 million for the initial concession fee, nearly €4 million for corrective actions and maintenance, and €2 million for the marina at the Levante dock.

The management led by Antonio Manuel Díaz Villalta claims that the operation will allow current members' fees to be frozen. The entity has 113 employees, more than 3,700 members, and exceeds 4,300 participants when including sports affiliates.

“The strategy relies on optimising income through the exploitation of the facilities,” the club states.

To balance the accounts without touching the fees, the plan aims to attract 800 new members and increase the membership from 3,700 to 4,500 members. The incorporation will be staggered in three phases: first, recovering former users and children of members, mainly people aged 35 to 45 with family responsibilities, who will fill half of the quota; then opening up to direct family members; and finally to sports affiliates, with discounts on the entry fee based on seniority. Once the quota is filled, regular fees will be reinstated as an economic barrier.

The goal is to relieve congestion at the historic headquarters of La Malagueta, which concentrates 90% of the social and sporting life. The strategy will redistribute activities among the 25,000 square meters of the club's two plots. The marina will host the most intense activities and the younger audience: a casual dining building with views of the dock, a beach bar, and a sunbed area on the pier. For sports, a building will be constructed for disciplines such as CrossFit and Hyrox, with changing rooms and an outdoor area. A recent structure will house two gyms of over 400 square meters each, one for general use and another for elite sports. It will also include a nautical training school and an auditorium, as well as a natural marine swimming pool in the dock between April and November, enclosed by protective nets four meters deep.

In the traditional clubhouse, spaces for senior members will be reorganised. The rehabilitation of the aquatic area will begin with the repair of the roof of the indoor pool by the end of September, followed by the renovation and heating of the outdoor pool for winter use. In spring, the indoor gym will be transformed into a sports centre adapted for seniors, offering pilates, aquagym, tai chi, balance training, and functional recovery.

During the same meeting, the president of the Port Authority, Carlos Rubio Basabe, announced the opening of the new cargo terminal in Los Prados. The space features 23,622.17 square meters of paved area, perimeter fencing, road access, a car park, and basic services of lighting, water, and electricity. The infrastructure will allow for the storage, repair, and cleaning of containers outside the port area, relieving congestion at the Noatum terminal.
