Málaga City Council has inaugurated a 25x11 metre mural on the south façade of the Higher School of Dramatic Art, created by the Málaga artist Eduardo Luque 'Lalone', with the aim of fostering environmental awareness through urban art.
Málaga City Council, through the Environmental Sustainability Area, has launched a new urban art initiative to promote ecological awareness. This is a large mural, 25 metres long by 11 high, which has been displayed since Wednesday on the south façade of the Higher School of Dramatic Art (ESAD), located on Louis Pasteur Boulevard in the Teatinos-University district.
The delegated councillors for Environmental Sustainability, Penélope Gómez, and for the Teatinos-University district, Borja Vivas, were responsible for inaugurating the work. The mural was created by the Málaga artist Eduardo Luque, known as 'Lalone', and is part of the municipal environmental awareness programme 'Málaga cómo te quiero!?', which has been developing actions to connect with citizens through various disciplines since 2014.
The work depicts the Greek goddess Thalia sitting on planet Earth in a reflective pose. Surrounding her, the mural includes iconic elements of the city, such as the Roman Theatre and the Alcazaba, alongside a representation of a Mediterranean mountain, alluding to the renaturalisation efforts currently underway in the capital. The composition is completed with a poetic message: "There is still land. The Earth whispers in every seed that is born, in every river that sings, in every wing that rises. Hope is to believe, to listen, to care. And in our hands, a new world can bloom."
This is not the first urban art intervention with environmental purposes promoted by the City Council. Last year, the same programme 'Málaga cómo te quiero!?' decorated a wall in the Sixto neighbourhood on the Cádiz Road. Additionally, the City Council has other lines of action, such as the 'Málaga Más Bella' programme, managed by the Citizen Participation Area along with the women's association Kartio and the Arrabal-AID association. This programme seeks community involvement and intergenerational dialogue through urban art to improve city spaces.
As part of 'Málaga Más Bella', the same artist Lalone recently created a mural on the exterior of CEIP Arturo Reyes, on Corregidor Francisco de Molina Street, in the Cruz del Humilladero district, featuring a design based on children's drawings inspired by animated film characters. Other similar works can be found on Camino de los Almendrales, at IES Manuel Alcántara, near San Miguel cemetery in the city centre, and two in the Campanillas district: one on the façade of the 'El Tarajal' school and another on the staircase between Rubinstein and Regaterín streets.
The list of interventions is completed with murals on the stairs of Avenida Pintor Joaquín Sorolla, in front of the Baños del Carmen, in the East district; Doctor Vargas Machuca Square, in the Bailén-Miraflores neighbourhood; and the Antonio Banderas promenade on the Cádiz Road. The women's association Kartio publishes a series of guidebooks documenting both the creation process and the final result of each mural.
With this new work, Málaga City Council reinforces its commitment to urban art as a tool for environmental awareness, combining aesthetics with an ecological message aimed at all audiences. The location of the mural, in a university area and a thoroughfare, aims to maximise its visual impact and raise awareness among the educational community and residents of the Teatinos-University district.
