The Málaga athlete Laura Aguilera, originally from Cartaojal, faces one of the most important events of her career this Friday by competing in the 106th Spanish National Athletics Championship, which runs from today until Sunday at the Estadio Ciudad de Málaga. The 400m hurdles event, in which Aguilera is a participant, kicks off with the semifinals starting at 20:15.
The championship marks the return of the absolute national event to the Málaga capital for the fourth time in history, following the editions in 1996 in Carranque and in 2005 and 2011 at the same venue, the Ciudad de Málaga. Thus, the province becomes the epicentre of Spanish athletics this weekend.
Laura Aguilera arrives at the event after being a European Under-23 finalist in Bergen 2025, with a personal best of 56.83 seconds and a season record of 57.95. However, the level of competition is exceptional: for the first time in the history of Spanish athletics, all athletes registered in the 400m hurdles have times under one minute, reflecting the excellent state of the discipline.
Among the standout rivals is national record holder Sara Gallego, who arrives after narrowly missing her own Spanish record by just two hundredths and is seeking her sixth absolute title. The current titleholder, Daniela Fra, a three-time national champion, will also be competing, aiming for her fourth consecutive championship. The Salamanca athlete Miriam Alonso, the historical leader of the national rankings with six absolute titles, is another key competitor. The list of favourites is completed by Carla García, the 2025 Spanish runner-up with a personal best of 56.12, and Paula Soria, who has also dipped below 58 seconds this year.
For the Cartaojal athlete, advancing past the semifinals and reaching the final on Saturday would be a significant achievement, given the high level of her opponents. The final is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, at 22:45, should Aguilera qualify.
