The taxi association demands to maintain the mobility arrangement without exceptions and recalls the precedent in Seville to avoid conflicts.
The Unified Málaga Taxi Association (AUMAT) has requested the Málaga City Council to maintain the access restrictions outlined in the special mobility arrangement for the Fair and that VTCs should not be allowed to access the reserved and restricted areas of the venue.
The organization believes that the arrangement designed for these days should be upheld without exceptions, especially considering the high concentration of people and vehicles registered during the Málaga Fair.
AUMAT also recalls the precedent of the Seville Fair, where a similar situation occurred regarding VTC access to certain restricted areas. For the association, the experience of the Andalusian capital should serve to prevent a conflict from recurring and to ensure a clear organization of mobility.
“It’s not a matter of competition, but of safety”
The association insists that its demand is not about competition between taxis and VTCs, but about the necessity to maintain an orderly and safe mobility arrangement during one of the events that generates the highest number of movements in the city.
The simultaneous presence of pedestrians, taxis, VTCs, and other vehicles in high-traffic areas can hinder circulation and create risk situations. Therefore, AUMAT considers it essential to maintain clearly defined pick-up zones and control access to also facilitate the work of emergency services.
“We are not against VTCs operating within the law. What we advocate is that the rules and the mobility arrangement established for the Fair are respected. We are not talking about competition here, but about safety and ensuring that thousands of people can move in an orderly manner,” says AUMAT president, Miguel Ángel Martín.
The taxi, key during peak demand times
AUMAT highlights the role of taxis during the Málaga Fair, especially during peak demand periods, when movements to and from the venue multiply.
The association believes that having specific pick-up points allows for traffic concentration, orderly passenger departures, and avoids interference between different modes of transport, contributing to maintaining smooth circulation.
In this regard, it demands that the areas reserved for taxis be respected and that the conditions established in the special arrangement be applied uniformly.
They ask the City Council to maintain the planned arrangement
In light of the possibility that VTCs may request access to currently restricted areas, AUMAT asks the Mobility Area of the Málaga City Council to maintain the planned limitations and avoid modifications that could disrupt the functioning of the arrangement.
“Taxis have been providing service during the Málaga Fair for years and are prepared to serve thousands of citizens and visitors. What we ask is for a clear organization to be maintained and for each mode of transport to respect the space and conditions that have been established,” the association points out.
AUMAT reiterates its willingness to collaborate with the City Council to facilitate mobility during the Fair, but believes that safety and order must prevail over any other interest.
The organization thus defends that access restrictions should be maintained during the special arrangement and that the areas reserved for taxi services remain clearly defined to ensure safer and more orderly mobility during the celebration.
