Historian Andrés Camino Romero has been appointed as the preacher for the Holy Week of Málaga in 2027, as announced by the Brotherhoods Association. The proclamation will take place on March 13 at the Teatro Cervantes.
The historian Andrés Camino Romero will be responsible for delivering the official proclamation of the Holy Week of Málaga in 2027. This was communicated on Monday by the president of the Brotherhoods Association, José Carlos Garín, during the governing board meeting that inaugurated the brotherhood course, as reported by Diario Sur.
The proclamation will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2027 at the Teatro Cervantes in the capital of Málaga. That year's Holy Week will be one of the earliest in recent times, with Palm Sunday on March 21.
Camino, a brother of the Cofradía de las Penas since 1977 and a throne bearer for the Virgin from 1981 to 2025, takes over from journalist Ignacio Castillo, this year's preacher who passed away on June 10. The new preacher explained to Diario Sur that he already has a draft of the text written: "I was caught by surprise. For two days I was reflecting, and starting from July 25, the feast of Santiago, I began to prepare what the text would be."
"It has been two very intense weeks, because I always have the fear that I won't make it, and my challenge was to have something written, a draft. I have achieved that and I have let it rest until the appointment has been made official. Now I will start to refine the text."
The historian received the commission from Garín on July 23 and has since dedicated about five hours a day to drafting the text. His intention is for the proclamation not to exceed an hour and fifteen minutes in duration. "I think that's a reasonable time, sufficient. The truth is that I am very satisfied and very happy. I will give everything I can," he added.
For Camino, being the preacher is "an honour, a privilege, and a gift that I did not expect." "Sometimes it comes without you asking for it. I certainly feel very honoured by the designation from the president of the Brotherhoods Association, José Carlos Garín, and for becoming the voice of the brotherhoods, which I have loved since I was a child," he stated.
Holding a degree in Geography and History and a PhD in History from the University of Málaga, Camino has directed the magazine La Saeta for 29 years. He is the author of several books on the history of Málaga's brotherhoods and in 2021 received the Málaga Research Award in Humanities for his work on Saint Manuel González García. He has delivered, among others, the proclamation for the Cofradía del Cautivo, the Glories of María Santísima de Araceli de Lucena, and the Vera Cruz de Almogía.
The Brotherhoods Association also announced that the official poster for Holy Week 2027 will be created by the Sevillian painter Isabel Sola, who designed the Holy Week poster for Seville in 2007 and for Cádiz this year in 2026. The work will be presented on January 14 at the Cine Albéniz, in an event led by Juan Carlos Estrada, the first lieutenant brother of the Archconfraternity of the Expiration.
Additionally, Garín announced that the senior sister of the Hermandad de las Penas, Ángela Guerrero, will be responsible for embodying the royal herald at the event organized by the Association on the eve of the Three Kings Parade.
