Mayor Jesús Lupiáñez visited the CEIP Juan Herrera Alcausa to check on the summer works. Over three years, the City Council has allocated more than two million euros to the municipality's educational network.
The Vélez-Málaga City Council has allocated over two million euros since 2023 to the improvement and maintenance of educational centres in the municipality. This was highlighted on Monday by the mayor, Jesús Lupiáñez, during his visit to the CEIP Juan Herrera Alcausa, known as “Los Olivos”, accompanied by the Councillor for Education, Lourdes Piña, and the Councillor for Municipal Buildings, Jesús María Claros.
At this school, several works were carried out over the summer: repair of a wall at risk of collapse, renovation and painting of bleachers and sports courts, general interior and exterior painting, repair of the collapsed outdoor floor, and improvement of the entrance pavement.
“When we arrived at the City Council, we found many centres that needed attention that they had not received for years. From the very beginning, we were clear that our schools could not be left behind and that we had to act progressively, centre by centre, to improve their facilities and, above all, to ensure that our boys and girls study in safer, well-maintained, and comfortable spaces,” the mayor stated.
The work at “Los Olivos” is part of a broader programme that has intervened in playgrounds, sports courts, fencing, roofs, toilets, access points, and educational spaces across the network. Among the most notable works is the CEIP Las Naciones, where 110 square metres of awnings were installed and 25 trees were planted in the playground.
At CEIP Blas Infante, in Torre del Mar, an exterior wall at risk of collapse was repaired, the toilets on both floors were renovated, the chlorination system was improved, and a roof was installed over part of the sports playground. At CEIP La Axarquía, the old caretaker's house was adapted to create two classrooms, a dining room, and a physiotherapy room for Special Education students.
Works have also been carried out at centres such as José Luis Villar Palasí, El Romeral, Juan Paniagua, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, Santiago Augusto Bellido, Andalucía, Vicente Aleixandre, Antonio Checa, San Faustino, Torrejaral de Valle-Niza, Cajiz and Chilches, La Gloria, Juan Porras, Genaro Rincón, and Custodio Puga, as well as at the municipal nursery schools Virgen del Carmen and La Fortaleza.
The Head of Studies at CEIP Juan Herrera Alcausa, Cristina Reina, expressed gratitude for the works on behalf of the educational community.
“We are extremely grateful for these improvements and that they were carried out during the summer holidays, allowing our students to start the school year enjoying them,” she stated.
Additionally, the City Council has installed more than 100 air conditioning units in the municipality's educational centres, an initiative that complements the conservation and improvement plan.
