Four people aged between 61 and 75 have been affected by a fire in a house on Valdepeñas street, in Torre del Mar. The block was evacuated and the injured were taken to Hospital de la Axarquía.
The fire broke out shortly after nine o'clock on Friday night in a house on Valdepeñas street, in the heart of the coastal area of Torre del Mar. Several neighbours alerted 112 upon seeing smoke and fearing that people were trapped inside. The rapid mobilization of emergency services prevented a greater tragedy.
Four affected taken to Hospital de la Axarquía
The healthcare teams from Centro de Emergencias Sanitarias 061 confirmed the transfer of four people to Hospital de la Axarquía, in Vélez-Málaga. These include a 61-year-old man and three women aged 70, 74, and 75. All of them showed symptoms of smoke inhalation, although health sources have not specified the severity of their condition.
The emergency response was activated immediately, involving firefighters, Local Police, and National Police. The firefighters proceeded with the preventive evacuation of the entire block of flats while locating the source of the fire in a ground-floor room.
A scare that mobilizes an entire neighbourhood
Valdepeñas street, a residential road close to the promenade of Torre del Mar, was filled with neighbours and onlookers during Friday night. The preventive evacuation affected several families, who were able to return to their homes after the early hours of the morning, once the firefighters declared the fire under control and ventilated the building.
The Vélez-Málaga Town Hall has reminded the importance of maintaining smoke detectors in homes, especially in those where elderly people reside. In this case, the rapid alert from neighbours was key for emergency services to act in time.
The fire was not the only significant incident in the region this weekend. On Saturday, a forest fire in the nearby municipality of Árchez was declared stabilised, mobilising 65 personnel and forcing the preventive evacuation of several homes.
At the moment, the causes of the flames in the house on Valdepeñas street are unknown. Firefighters have opened an investigation to clarify what happened, although it all points to a domestic accident. The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the elderly population in the face of such disasters.
