Nerja's Town Council unanimously approves the transfer of ownership of the transformer centre to the Andalusian Health Service, which will supply electricity to the future health centre. The mayor, José Alberto Armijo, has subsequently signed the agreement with the health administration.

The new health centre in Nerja takes another step towards becoming operational. The Town Council has unanimously approved the transfer of ownership of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS) transformer centre that will supply electricity to the building, located between Pescia Avenue and the lower area of the Chíllar River. The operation is structured through a subjective domain mutation, as published by Diario Sur.

The mayor, José Alberto Armijo (PP), later signed the agreement with the health administration. The request originated on 1 September from the Territorial Health Delegation, through the Málaga-Axarquía Health Management Area. The Town Council thus hands over to the SAS facilities specifically built to supply the new healthcare equipment.

The transferred installation includes the prefabricated modular building housing the electrical equipment, high voltage apparatus, and a 630 kVA transformer, as well as the low voltage distribution board. The system operates with a primary voltage of 20 kV and secondary voltage of 400 V.

“Since the moment the Junta de Andalucía requested the approval of this agreement, we have swiftly pushed forward all necessary procedures,” noted Armijo.

The councillor for Heritage, Ángela Díaz, and the Urban Planning officer, Alberto Tomé, both from the PP, have described the operation as “a new administrative step” in the coordination between the Town Council and the Junta. Both have emphasised the importance of progressing towards the opening of a facility they consider “essential for the residents of Nerja and Frigiliana.”

This procedure comes as the centre approaches the final stretch of a story that dates back more than two decades. Construction officially began in July 2024 and the Junta estimated the total investment to exceed €9.5 million, with €9.27 million for the construction and another €256,520 for project management. The infrastructure is funded by the Primary Care Infrastructure Improvement Plan (MINAP) and FEDER funds.

The building has 4,520 square metres distributed over three above-ground floors and a basement. Its care programme includes 26 standard consultations, five multipurpose rooms, five paediatrics, minor surgery, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiology, mammography, emergencies, treatments, and observation spaces, among other facilities. The Junta estimated it will serve over 25,000 inhabitants of Nerja and Frigiliana and will have 77 professionals.

Health forecasts indicate a gradual transfer before the end of 2026, aiming to maintain assistance while personnel, equipment, and services are moved from the current facilities. The approved electrical transfer is part of these preparations, although the Junta de Andalucía and the Nerja Town Council have not yet announced a specific inauguration date.

The opening will coincide with a transformation of this area of Nerja. The Town Council has awarded the new Alcalde Gabriel Broncano street for €948,732.87, which will connect the Health Professionals roundabout with Pescia Avenue and facilitate access to the health centre. The project, which began in early September, has an execution period of eight months and includes two-way traffic, pavements, lighting, and new service networks.

Next to the health centre, a parking building with 847 spaces is planned, spread over four floors and 25,406 square metres, on top of which a transport interchange is expected to be built in the future. The transfer of the transformer centre to the SAS adds another piece to the operationalisation of a healthcare infrastructure requested since 2003.
