The mayor of Antequera, Manolo Barón, participated this Thursday in the protest held at the entrance of the extrahospital emergency point of Campillo Bajo to show unanimous rejection of the assaults suffered by healthcare professionals. The event, held at the same centre where a doctor was threatened last Thursday, was attended by health officials, members of the Municipal Corporation, and numerous healthcare workers.
The head of the Antequera-Estación Clinical Management Unit, Ana Pozo, read a statement on behalf of the professionals in which she expressed the strongest condemnation of violent attitudes in public health. Pozo reminded everyone that the work of healthcare professionals is "nothing other than serving the public and caring for their health," and asserted the right to work in conditions of safety and respect.
The Antequera mayor conveyed the city's support and solidarity with his presence, emphasizing the firm rejection of any threat, insult, or assault during the exercise of healthcare duties. Alongside him were the Director of Nursing for the Northern Health Area of Málaga, Rogelio García, and several councillors from the Government Team.
The incident that prompted the protest occurred last Thursday when a doctor was subjected to verbal assaults and threats while performing her duties at the Campillo Bajo emergency point. This episode adds to others recorded in the province, leading professional associations and unions to demand measures to curb violence in healthcare centres.
The protest, called at noon, served to highlight the support of the public for professionals who, as Pozo reminded, "serve the public" and deserve to carry out their work without fear. The City Council of Antequera has already announced that it will continue to support all initiatives that ensure the safety of healthcare personnel.
The event concluded with applause from the attendees and a commitment to maintain vigilance against potential new incidents. Healthcare professionals have insisted that zero tolerance must translate into concrete measures, such as the installation of alert systems or the presence of security at emergency points.
