Mijas invests 900,000 euros for 7,500 students to start the school year

The 11 infant and primary centres in Mijas open with more than 7,500 students, about 200 more than last year, following maintenance works carried out over the summer.

More than 7,500 students from Mijas began the school year this Thursday in the 11 infant and primary education centres of the municipality. The City Council has allocated 900,000 euros to maintenance, conservation, and repair work that has been carried out throughout the summer, taking advantage of the school break, according to the council.

The number of students exceeds that of the previous year by about 200 students, according to data from the Education department. Students entered classes in a staggered manner from 09:00 hours and the day proceeded normally.

The mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, visited the CEIP Virgen de la Peña in Las Lagunas to check the condition of the centre at the start of classes. Mata explained that the work is carried out throughout the year, but is concentrated in the summer when the most extensive works are undertaken.

"The concepts that the City Council assumes and finances are personnel, materials, and service contracts," the mayor pointed out, accompanied by the councillor for Infrastructure, Juan José Torres.

In the eleven centres (ten infant and primary schools and one early childhood education school), painting and interior conditioning work has been carried out since the end of June: classrooms, hallways, offices, and other facilities. Exterior areas and walls of the playgrounds have also been painted, plumbing installations have been repaired, and trees have been pruned where necessary.

Additionally, awnings have been installed in sports grandstand areas, such as at Virgen de la Peña itself, and children's areas have been adapted with repairs to facilities in the centres that required it.

In terms of cleaning, the City Council has carried out in-depth work in playgrounds and outdoor areas with specialized machines, and has disinfected windows, glass surfaces, tiles, coverings, curtains, classrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas.
