The Mijas Town Hall will allocate €100,000 to recognise the achievements of local athletes in national and international competitions during 2025. Applications can be submitted from tomorrow until September 23.
The mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, and the sports councillor, María Francisca Alarcón, presented a new line of sports excellence awards on Thursday, endowed with €100,000. This is the first time the municipality has launched such an initiative to support its athletes.
The grants are aimed at athletes registered in Mijas who have achieved national or international merits between January 1 and December 31, 2025. Ana Mata explained that the goal is to recognise the efforts of those who "carry the name of our municipality as a banner" and to help them continue with their dedication.
“Mijas has great athletes who always carry the name of our municipality as a banner. Many are competing at high levels, striving to the maximum, so we believe it is very appropriate to recognise them, and that is why the Mijas Town Hall wants to help them continue with their dedication, which needs a lot of support to bear fruit,” the mayor stated.
In individual sports, the amounts vary according to the achievement: €2,500 for participating in world championships, the Olympic Games, or the Paralympic Games with the Spanish team; €2,000 for competing in European championships or cups; €1,500 for reaching the podium in Spanish championships or cups at the individual level, by clubs, or with the Andalusian team; and €750 for finishing between 4th and 10th place in Spanish championships or cups. In team sports, the criteria are similar.
The awards will be granted on a competitive basis and are not cumulative: each athlete will receive a single amount corresponding to their highest achievement. If the applicant is a minor, the application must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
Essential requirements include being registered in Mijas at the time of achieving the merit and not having been sanctioned by a firm resolution for serious or very serious infractions in sports discipline.
The application period begins this Friday, September 4, and will remain open until September 23, which means 15 working days. Documentation can be submitted through the municipal electronic headquarters.
