The Junta de Andalucía awards UTE Marina Internacional de Marbella the expansion and operation of the marina, which will feature 750 berths, parking for 1,000 cars, and a commercial area.
The Public Agency of Ports of Andalucía (APPA) has awarded UTE Marina Internacional de Marbella, formed by entrepreneurs from Marbella and the Costa del Sol, the expansion and operation of the marina at La Bajadilla. The operation, which will be formalised on 1 October, involves an investment of over €200 million and a concession period of 40 years, according to Diario Sur.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Development of the Junta de Andalucía, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, during his first visit to Marbella as a member of the Governing Council, accompanied by the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz. The mayor described the initiative as "a strategic initiative for Marbella" that will allow the city to "grow also within the maritime sphere".
The project plans to triple the berths, increasing from 268 to around 750, and expand the water surface to be 3.5 times the current size. A new breakwater of 1.13 kilometres will be built in the southern area and another of 450 metres in the west, along with a jetty to channel the Primero stream.
The new marina will accommodate large yachts and cruise ships, and will include a commercial area and a parking lot with 1,000 spaces. The fishing port will remain within the premises but will be relocated to the westernmost end.
"It will be a new port," summarised the director of the APPA, Ignacio Álvarez-Ossorio.
The award was formally made on 1 September, following a process that began in 2019 which included legal, coastal, and environmental reports. The UTE will have eleven months to draft the project and 36 months to execute it, without the port closing during the works.
The minister framed the action within "the strategic route that the Andalusian Government is following to revive port facilities" and assured that it will provide "a significant economic boost" to Marbella. The concession will come into effect from 1 January 2027, when the UTE will begin managing the marina.
