The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, expects the works on the Albergue África to finish between late 2027 and early 2028, a year ahead of the contractual deadline. The project, with an investment of €24.38 million, includes an underground parking facility with 571 spaces.
The works on the Albergue África project, the largest investment by the Marbella municipal government during the 2023-2027 term, could conclude between late 2027 and early 2028, as announced by the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, during a visit to the site alongside the councillor for Housing, Youth and Land Planning, Rocío Díaz.
The project, which started in June with a 30-month execution period, has a contractual deadline of December 2028. The advance announced by the mayor represents a significant margin over the planned schedule.
The project includes an investment of €24.38 million and the construction of an underground parking facility with 571 spaces and approximately 8,500 square meters of surface facilities, which will include sports courts, green areas, and recreational spaces.
Muñoz has stated that the work "will transform a strategic space in the city centre to meet the needs of the residents." She added that the goal is for it to be completed between late 2027 and early 2028, and praised "the good pace of execution and the professionalism of the company responsible for a project that is particularly complex due to its characteristics and its location in the urban centre."
The initiative is the result of a agreement between the City Council and the Junta de Andalucía, whereby the regional government granted an administrative concession for a plot linked to the shelter. "Thanks to institutional collaboration, we have been able to make use of this land and put it at the service of the citizens with an initiative that will benefit not only Miraflores but also the centre, the Old Town, and the Leganitos area," the mayor explained.
Of the total parking spaces, 288 will be sold to residents at cost price and 203 will be available on a rotation basis at €1 for 12 hours. The remaining 80 will be allocated to the shelter managed by Inturjoven, the only compensation the Junta will receive for the land concession, in addition to preferential use of various sports facilities and green spaces.
Muñoz specified that "starting in September," the City Council "will begin working with residents to establish the procedure that will allow them to apply for these spaces, which will be made available to them at the direct construction cost." The 288 spaces for residents will be located on the basement level, while the 203 rotation spaces will be on the ground floor.
The project will also include a new office for the Andalusian Employment Service. Regarding the shelter, Inturjoven will have reserved use of the multi-sport court and its adjacent building during certain time slots, as well as priority in recreational areas during Holy Week and the summer season.
Councillor Rocío Díaz highlighted the cooperation between both administrations: "It is necessary to combine efforts and seek consensus to improve the lives of residents." She argued that "all public land should serve the citizen" and emphasized that the outcome "will translate into more parking for residents, better facilities for our youth, new sports spaces, green areas, and an Inturjoven shelter with improved services."
Díaz reported that the shelter's facilities accommodated 3,884 people between January 1 and August 20 of this year, more than half of whom were under 26 years old, and hosted guests from 55 nationalities.
