Fuengirola's council has unanimously approved modifying the IBI ordinance so that 474 large families (up from the current 86) can benefit from a 50% discount. The property value limit is raised to €60,000.
The Fuengirola City Council has taken the first step for more large families in the municipality to save on the Property Tax (IBI). The council has initially approved, unanimously by all political groups, a modification of the tax ordinance that expands the number of family units benefiting from a 50% discount on this tax from 86 to 474. This represents an increase of 451%.
The Councillor for Finance, Rosa Ana Bravo, explained that the main change consists of raising the property value limit per child to access the discount. Until now, large families with a single home and whose property value divided by the number of children was less than €40,000 could apply for the discount. With the new wording, this threshold is set at €60,000.
Additionally, the proposal includes two further improvements. On one hand, when there is a child with a disability in the family, this will count as two for the calculation of the limit. On the other hand, hereditary shares in other family properties will not be penalised, a requirement that previously excluded some families.
“This change will allow more large families to access this tax benefit. Because this municipal government wants to help that sector of Fuengirola society cope with daily living expenses,” the councillor stated during the plenary session.
The modification, which was already included in the 2026 Regulatory Plan, will now be subject to public exposure before its final approval. It is expected to come into effect in the next fiscal year, so interested families will be able to apply from then on.
In the same session, the council also gave final approval to a planning agreement that will allow the installation of a public lift between Carvajal Avenue and the Seafront Promenade, at the height of the area known as ‘Los Olimpos’. The initiative, which started in November 2024, materialises thanks to an agreement between the City Council and the developer Costa Living S. L.
The Councillor for Urban Planning, Rocío Arriaga, explained that the company, in exchange for being able to build a housing development on a plot on Subasta Street, will fund and execute the lift. The aim is to overcome the height difference between the avenue and the promenade, improving accessibility in the area.
Finally, the council has definitively approved a detailed study in the AA-10 action area of the General Urban Planning Plan, as well as for the TB-RF/5 plot of API-09, procedures that will allow progress in the urban development of the municipality.
For the residents of Fuengirola, the extension of the IBI discount represents direct economic relief. Large families that meet the new requirements will be able to halve their municipal tax bill, which is one of the most significant in the tax burden of households. The City Council encourages those interested to stay alert for the public exposure period to submit objections if deemed necessary.
The measure is part of a municipal policy to support families, which already includes other discounts and aids. With this change, Fuengirola ranks among the municipalities in the province with one of the most extensive discounts for large families on the IBI.
