A woman impersonated a doctor last Saturday in the Ophthalmology Service of the Virgen de la Victoria Clinical University Hospital in Málaga. Security staff detained her in the waiting room and handed her over to the National Police.
The Ophthalmology Service of the Virgen de la Victoria Clinical University Hospital in Málaga was the scene last Saturday, September 26, of a robbery attempt by a woman posing as a doctor. According to Diario Sur from health sources, the intruder accessed the consultation area dressed in medical attire and was caught handling folders and office supplies.
The events occurred shortly after three in the afternoon when an on-duty ophthalmologist went to the admission and information office to conduct a test on some patients. There, she came face to face with the suspect, who was wearing trousers and clogs typical of those used by surgeons in the operating room. Upon being discovered, the woman attempted to leave the consultation area, but the doctor alerted the hospital's security team.
Two security guards immediately responded and detained the woman in the waiting room, preventing her from leaving. The suspect was found with a pair of sunglasses stolen from the offices and a wallet containing money, the amount of which has not been disclosed. Officers from the National Police who arrived at the hospital took charge of her and transferred her to the Provincial Police Station as she was not carrying any identification.
Before her transfer, the guards inspected the consultation area and lockers to check for any damage. No damages were found, so the woman was stripped of her medical attire. The service was then re-examined, and its facilities were temporarily closed while various procedures were carried out, which concluded with the reopening of the area.
“She put on a doctor's coat and was entering Ophthalmology, in the consultations, taking advantage of the fact that on a Saturday at that time there are fewer people in the hospital,” explained consulted health sources.
The same sources indicate that among the alleged charges that could be brought against her are trespassing and theft. The investigation remains open to determine the extent of what was stolen.
This incident adds to other occurrences registered at the Clinical Hospital in the last month and a half. On August 25, security staff detained a 44-year-old man of Hungarian nationality who had roamed four floors of the hospital allegedly stealing chains, watches, wallets, and tobacco from rooms occupied by elderly people or unaccompanied patients. Days earlier, he had committed minor thefts and was allowed to leave pending his reoffending, which ultimately occurred.
In the first week of September, security personnel subdued a man who was loitering around the hospital pharmacy with suspicious behaviour and intended to steal medications. On Wednesday, September 9, around four-thirty in the afternoon, the emergency department was the scene of a fight between two patients who assaulted each other with punches and had to be separated. One of them allegedly stabbed the other outside the premises, although the injuries were not serious, according to the same sources. The swift intervention of guards and orderlies prevented the altercation from escalating.
